They have some money coming off the books, but I don't know if it's enough to overhaul two-thirds of the pitching staff, which is looking like what they have to do. Unless you have confidence in Norris, Boyd and Fulmer contributing consistently. I don't.

tigers have ample money coming off the books to get a top 5 free agent starter... and a middle of the road starter. There isn't a single free agent reliever worth a piss out there and I doubt they invest in a LFer... they will have a good 35 mil easy to put towards two starters... and that is more than enough.

Feliz and Gorzelanny need to be DFA'd... there are 10 guys in the minors that can out pitch them right now out of the bullpen... 10... easy

paying money for guys past 30 to be a reliever is such a crap shoot... they can fall off a cliff at any point. guys are relievers because they didn't have the stuff to start... so as soon as they lose a little off their pitches as a reliever.. its good night to their career.

6.21 ERA and a 1.90 WHIP is a big-ass cliff.

The Tigers do need to look at recognizing and developing relievers AS relievers in the minors. It has worked well for other teams.

the problem the tigers had until about 2013 was they kept drafting college relievers thinking they would help the bullpen... when in reality... if a pitcher isn't good enough to start in college.. odds are they suck.

The retread reliever strategy (Joba, Gorzelanny, Feliz, etc.) certainly is not working.

Have to also knock how they develop these players in the minor leagues both positional and pitcher.. Teams like the Cards never really draft high but always have replacement level players ready to take over..

Tigers development of pitchers is retarded... they take guys that are obviously not capable of starting in the MLB and keep them in minor league rotations... never moving them to the pen until its to late. its ridiculous to watch. They do it year in and year out.

Tigers have actually been ok developing position players. They don't draft position players high very often, so most come from international signings or diamond in the rough findings.. but you can't argue that Devon Travis, Eugenio Suarez, Avasail Garcia, and many others aren't nice finds... and even guys like Cameron Maybin and Ramon Santiago have had nice long careers. By no means are the Tigers producing world beaters.. but they develop position players much better than they do relievers... In all honesty.. the Tigers have done an ok job finding and developing starters... its really just their lack of ability to find relievers that is killing them. They keep guys in minor league rotations when they are not going to be MLB starters... when they could put them in the bullpen and possibly develop them their.. but they rarely do this.

Porcello (not this year) Smyly, Verlander, all obviously worked out well from the Tigers farm... and numerous other guys like Andrew Miller carved out careers. Even Jacob Turner could still easily end up being decent... he has just been bitten by the injury bug... but he is only 24 still.
