someone needs to teach pajama pants (fielder) how to slide into home. If he gets his front foot on the plate (like the ws last season) he is easily safe.

I see holes....many holes. I recall that not long ago the team had 5-6 starters hitting over .300. Now they have 2.

Why is Avila still playing? Is Pena hurt?

I have not seen any injury report about Pena....unless one comes out today.

Guesses: 1. Fister prefers Avila over Pena
2. Detroit is giving Avila every chance before they make a change.

Can't be hitting. Avila is 0-8 against Walters, Pena 2-3.

Leyland's choices at the time some reporter asked him the question about Valverde's performance:
A. Say what he said
B. Call Valverde a bum
C. Say nothing or somehow avoid giving an answer.

If you believe that B is what he should have done....then managing is probably not a good job choice for you. If you selected C...then perhaps a job in public relations might be your future.

Since 'most' of us realize that uttering choice C is not a good option and saying "no comment" or "next question" is just about as bad. I would say a semi non-committal answer like the one he gave (suggestion - to me - that the team win was satisfying, as opposed to the alternative) was acceptable. Maybe not the best answer, but acceptable.

Managers who start to throw their players under the bus, tend to not last long. Many see it as part of a manager's job to protect his players from the media.

D. None of the above. He stated that he was happy that valverde wasn't walking batters and was ok with his performance allowing two home runs. He should not have been ok with that performance and JL has never had a problem before speaking his mind. For the record I think JL is the best choice out there, clearly you think I'm trying to dog him and that I think I would be a better manager? lol, nah. There are many things I like about JL but him saying valverdes crap performance was adequate is not one.

if kelly was 2-3 and Dirks was 0-8 we all know who would be in LF. however getting back to Pena he is a back up player who traditionally has been a 60-70 games a year player. The future catcher is McAnn currently hitting 321 in AA , although only 2 HR,s. He is probably not quite ready. They could bring up either Holladay or Cabrerra and give Alex some time in Toledo to work on his swing.

there is a reason JL has managed in small basebaqll markets like Pitt, detroit, Miami and Colorado. He just can't handle the press and anyone questioning his moves. Can you imagine him with his " who the %$@#@ do you want me to close" in a place like Philly, Boston or New York or " thats my lineup whether you like it or not". The press in those towns would eat him up.

I have a feeling Leyland would be ok, especially with his record. His comment was just a jab at Dombrowski. I have no idea how much input JL has on personnel but DD has the final say. JL irritation was exaggerated by the fact that it happened to JV.

5 runs yesterday was the team's highest in the 6-game road trip. 3 runs or less scored in 4 of 6 games. Fortunate we have the great pitching to get us a split on the trip.

With Austin back at the top of the order again, things should fall into place pretty quickly. I don't anticipate the starting staff to keep up this ridiculous pace much longer. But they shouldn't have to. This lineup is built to put huge numbers. And I think they'll do just that, maybe starting tonight. Welcome back to the big leagues Jake Arrieta!

Hey nate mcClouth from whitehall is coming to town. My cousin just called me an hour ago.....i guess nate invited him over to detroit for todays game. Wish i was in michigan, i woulda went. I made sure to tell my cousin the whole muskegon/whitehall debate thing. Maybe nate gets interviewed and straigtens it out.....or as my cousin told me once before, i think nate is ashamed to be from "small" whitehall.

Keep an eye out for another whitehall star tho....my other younger cousin is staring for them again next year...,he wont be as good as his older brother tho. When he graduated he was 2nd in the state of michigan for total HR's behind drew henson. He had also held the record for consecutive HR's. but he chose wrestling over ball.

longer. But they shouldn't have to. This lineup is built to put huge numbers.

A string of 14 straight quality starts by Tigers pitching ended with Anibal Sanchez's outing Saturday. Doogie's QS yesterday gave the starters 20 QS in their last 22 games. That's almost unheard of.

As you said, smitty, the Tiger lineup is built to put up better numbers than they have (especially on the road). They aren't a team that's going to single you to death and scratch out runs, yet it seems they've been having to do that lately to win games. They're a team that ultimately, as Leyland himself said, will score by hitting a lot of doubles and hitting some over the wall. The Tigers are 1st in batting average (.279) and 5th in doubles, but only 12th in home runs.

Interestingly, the three teams with fewer home runs are all in the AL Central: White Sox, Twins and Royals.
