The Ottawa Senators and New York Rangers have been engaged in trade discussions for some time and could be inching closer to a deal.
The NHL holiday roster freeze lifts at 12:01am on Dec 28, upon which teams can resume trading players, placing them on waivers, and calling players up and down from the AHL.
But that doesn't mean teams cannot talk shop during the break in action.

Senators GM Bryan Murray has been trying to acquire defenseman Michael Del Zotto from the Rangers for a good portion of the season, and it's believed the two sides have made progress in trade negotiations.
The Rangers have been active on the trade front, and GM Glen Sather has had several discussions involving a number of his players.
Del Zotto, 23, hasn't meshed well with Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault and has been a healthy scratch for several teams this season.
In 29 games for the Rangers so far this year, Del Zotto has registered two goals and five assists for seven points.
The Carolina Hurricanes, Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars have also reportedly inquired about Del Zotto. Del Zotto was drafted 20th overall by the Rangers in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Unless they upped their offer from one of Gryba or Greening, I don't see this happening. I would take Michalek though.

Buzz: The Latest On The Michael Del Zotto Trade Rumors

Rangers management has all but settled on the idea that they will trade Michael Del Zotto and they continue to see a top-four defenseman, preferably one that is right handed. (NY Post)
It is unlikely, due to Del Zotto’s struggles that they will get a player of that caliber and that Rangers management will have to decide whether to take the best offer they have or hold out for a better deal. (NY Post)
Ottawa, Colorado and Toronto all have varying degrees of interest and Toronto may be willing to move defenseman Jake Gardiner. (NY Post)

@RealKyper: In wake of Carlyle rant this morning 2 #NHL clubs have confirmed for me #Leafs have made Kadri available in any trade discussion.

A Kadri/DZ swap would be nice.

With Gleason being dealt to Toronto, most likely will take them out of the MDZ race.

as long as this kid stays in NY, he will never be whatever he was supposed to be to which i have no clue as to what he was to be

Del Zotto was one of best dman under Torts but has struggled under AV if it wasnt for DZ we would have never made it past the Caps two years ago. He has the talent and has shown it but I agree I think he needs a change in scenery and if it can get us some Offense I would be willing to trade him and go with Allen or Mcllrath on the Blueline

He has the offensive talent, no doubt about it, it's the defensive side of the game he lacks. Not strong at all, doesn't play a psyical game at all.

Sounds like a deal will be done soon.

With the Rangers in Toronto tomorrow to take on the Maple Leafs, it’s expected that Rangers management will meet with Newport Sports, the agents for Michael Del Zotto, to discuss the Rangers “continued efforts” to trade Del Zotto. (Darren Dreger)

Sharks interested in Del Zotto?
As the New York Rangers continue their attempts to trade defenseman Michael Del Zotto, it appears the San Jose Sharks could be one team in the mix.
Elliotte Friedman of CBC, in his latest 30 Thoughts column, suggests the Sharks are interested in Del Zotto

The Ottawa Senators, Carolina Hurricanes, Edmonton Oilers and Buffalo Sabres have all reportedly had conversations with the Rangers about Del Zotto, and it appears New York GM Glen Sather is getting closer to making a move.

The Sharks have been on the lookout for a mobile defenseman for some time, and might zero in on Del Zotto, whose price tag has dropped since the season started.
Sather is looking to improve his roster and might be trying to package Del Zotto in a deal for an upgrade in another area on his club, a move the Sharks might not have interest in. Friedman also indicates the Sharks are in the market for a depth forward.
