Wonder if he play’s again ? As long as it was the impact that caused it and not some heart issue I’d say he definitely can if he recovers fully … League should make chest protectors mandatory after this !
Yeah, with Pronger in 1998, he was cleared and freakin' playing 2 days later after he was hit.
But, with Bouwmeester, they discovered he had a heart issue and was forced to retire.

Interesting nugget : the trainer, Ray Barile, was behind the bench and helped save both of these players

I don't think the chest protector would help against this (freak) injury.
This injury does not require great force - just incredible timing.

I think he will be able to. Question I have is will he.

If he chooses to play I have no issue, if he chooses to hang it up. I'll understand.

Actually they do have them specifically designed to stop that from happening, here is one as an example…

That is not as bulky as I expected. Would it work with all the other pads?

Good question, not sure, but I can imagine the league could have a company make some that could be comfortable and fit better …

My first thought was boxing. The chest may not be a targeted area of the body but in thousands of fights you have to think sometimes punches land there.

Absolutely, just not at that mili-second.
I have a close friend that was a hell of a fighter. I used to box myself.
One day he was hitting the heavy bag and I commented on his technique. He responded with, "would it hurt?"
I told him no , of course.
Later that day after a couple of beers, he popped me in the chest. It hurt.
Next day he was ordering a pizza. When he turned around I popped him in the chest - right in the middle of the sternum, where it would not hurt anything. He quit breathing and after a moment he said he felt his heart stop.It was a good punch!
We did not think much of it at the time but after this incident with Damar, I reallize things could have gone very badly.....

Guardian angel for both of you said I-need a beer and a 3 month vacation. The things we did when we were young and survived makes us shake our head when we get a few gray hairs and and a lot smarter
