You have a right to your opinion but I disagree. I think him getting on the field at all this year is very impressive considering what happened and what he had to do to get back on the field.
What did he have to do?

I look at this season as he didn’t get cut because of his story. Maybe I’m missing something.

It will likely be Hamlin, but I too think it belittles the award. If comeback player of the year has been traditionally determined by their performance on the field, then Hamlin shouldn't sniff the award.

I don't think there's a winner this year. I'd be ok with no award. Mayfield has been average in 2023. Tagovailoa had a statistically excellent 2022 on 13 games and he hasn't been so lucky with defensive dropped passes in 2023. Flacco played 5 games, again. Hamlin barely plays. Stafford already has a CPoY trophy from 2011. Stafford might win again by default.

no award would be Hamlin

What did he have to do?
He had to clear a bunch of benchmarks and hurdles with the condition of his heart for him to be cleared again.

I would say the fact that he got on the field and competed is the story.

I guess there is a first for everything. Maybe Aaron Rodgers can win it next year for just showing up after tearing his Achilles this past season.

I don't understand why they would take it from someone who legitimately helped his team by contributing on the field.

He was cleared last spring.

Didnt realize there was any concern for his heart going forward. Just thought it was his lungs from the 100% oxygen.

Again, I have nothing against any of the candidates. I'd be happy to let those 5 players discuss it and go with whatever they want to do. Maybe 1 person really wants it. Maybe 1 person could use it as a springboard to do more good in the community. Let that person have it. I'd be ok with it being shared. My only gripe would be if someone gets it this year without 'earning' it then next year it'll be worth less to some who might deserve it a lot and might have been able to do some good with it. Can't protect the future so...give to *cough*.

Tua feels like a weird choice just because he had a strong 2022 season (I get he missed a few games, but it's not like he missed > 50% of the season either)

How is it not Joe Flacco?

Guy was thrown off a bridge in 2018 by the Ravens and started all of 17 games over 4 years for the Donkeys and Jets. He was 1-8 in his last 9 starts prior to 2023.

Hell, I didn't even know he was still in football till announced a starter for the Browns in like Week 11. Dude averaged 323.3 yards a game and threw 13 TDs in 5 starts with a 4-1 record helping the Browns to a late season playoff run.

I hope to God that this is a one off and we never have to see a guy die on the field and then get brought back and then be on the field the next year. I think it’s a rare occurrence and it deserves to be recognized in this way.

Good point.

We all nearly saw a guy die on the field from a crazy weird heart thing of a perfectly healthy and physically gifted human being. The fact he is walking is amazing, the fact he played in an NFL game afterwards will undoubtedly be a movie in the near future.

I was wrong about this. We don't know who the 2023 winner is just yet but I hear they've already carved Joe Burrow's name into the 2024 winner's slot.

The only reason Titus Young won't win it is because no one realizes how great he is.

But why? The award has always been about measuring someone’s success on the field.

Let’s be honest, if he had this heart attack in the offseason and was brought back to life with the same limitations, he isn’t even in the NFL this season.

I like the guy and love the story but this is a participation. As far as I know, that is not the intent of the award, and it has never been given away in that way.
