I thought I read somewhere that he declared free agency but I cannot remember the source.

As for Altherr, what was the point of picking him up, just to jettison him so quickly? I get the idea of claiming him to because the Phillies would have controlled him but why pick him up if he was not worth keep for even a week?
Trying to get him through waivers and keep him in the minors. No risk pickup, potential moderate reward. Meh.

The move still seems stupid to me. If he isn't worth keeping for more than one at-bat, he isn't worth getting at all.
No risk, potential moderate reward.

If the player carries a potential moderate reward, in my opinion, he isn't going to be exposed to the waiver wire so quickly. They already have a bunch of outfielders at AAA for insurance, I would think a waiver wire pick up would be geared toward immediate big league help.

Mac outrighted, Mike Yastrzemski called up. He's a likely platoon partner with Tyler Austin.

Since this is his second time being outrighted, Mac can decline the assignment and become a free agent (as it's unlikely he's claimed).

So, for the record...

You are against Mac getting DFA’d?
Yup. Give the young kids more of a chance and just trade away older players for prospects. This is a shit team. Be shitty all the way and let the kids get more playing time and a long time doing it. Give them the year. They may figure shit out by the end of the season.

Sam Coonrod gets the call, Suarez sent back to AAA.

Chance to see a ML debut! Coonrod throws hard. Pretty much just a fastball/slider guy. He's been extremely wild this year with 5.50 BB/9, but he's also serving up a lot of meatballs. 30 Ks in 18 innings is nice, though.

I've been very vocal about giving young(er) players a chance but Mac earned that dfa. I would have liked another week of playing time but am fine with this move. I do hope he lands elsewhere and re-discovers his stroke. This year's showing was worse than anything he's shown in the big leagues in previous seasons. It may be that his concussion never fully healed.

Coonrod's AAA assignment this year was aggressive, considering his injury and rusty showing last year. He hasn't looked good this year (except the Ks). I'm surprised Jerez wasn't brought back up.

Per his uncle, it’s healed.

Glad to hear that. Too bad he couldn't capitalize what was his best opportunity to establish himself in the big leagues. Considering how he's done in the past, this showing was surprising. I have to wonder if he put way too much pressure on himself.

I’m going to tread softly on that issue at work. If I get any insight, I’ll pass it along.
