Giants resigned Hunter Strickland to a minor-league deal. Apparently he had TJ in May, which explains why he disappeared after his strong start in SJ.

He is a good 6th or 7th SP.

If any team wanted him for a current bully spot, though, he would have been claimed. He is making min. The fact that no one claimed him means no one wants him.

Yeah, I get that. I'm just surprised is all.

Chez activated from the 15-day DL

Vogey is expected to join the 25-man tomorrow, so GQ's DFA opens a 40-spot. Another 25-spot will be needed for him, though.

Ah, GQ - we loved you for a day. At least you'll have a nice story for your grandkids.

Why?

Is that procedural somehow? Do we have to assign him in the hopes he refuses?

Don't we have enough catching prospects emerging that we need GQ blocking the plate, so to speak? It's not like he's ever going to be anything other than what he was.

I was kinda wondering this myself.

I can only assume that they have zero faith in Williams OR have him (Williams) on a coaching track.

The 3 highest catchers in the system, I would think are all higher in the depth-chart than GQ (Monell, Williams, Susac -- heck, maybe even LaTorre).

No, that's NOT a required procedural thing. To remove a guy from the 40-man, a team places the player on one of two waivers :

1 - Unconditional Release Waivers. Any team can claim him for $1. If not claimed, he is released (becomes a free agent).

2 - Irrevocable Outright Waivers. The wants to "outright" a player to the minors (remove him from the 40-man and send him to the minors). Any team can claim him for $20K. If nobody claims him, he passes thru waivers and can be sent to the minors. The team can also release him at this point (although they might have to put him on release waivers). The player can refuse assignment if he has already been outrighted at least once before OR if he has more than 3 years service time. The player can also simply accept the assignment.

Williams : even from the beginning (when he was drafted) the talk I heard was that he was an "organizational player" (he would stay in the minors). They wanted him because of his good catching skills, to work with their top-notch minor-league pitchers that they drafted.

I would hope that Monell will be the backup C next year (unless he's a horrible defensive C). I'd rather have Hector in Fresno playing every day next season, instead of sitting on the bench in SF. Monell will be a minor-league free agent after 2013 if he isn't added to the 40-man, so it's shit or get off the pot time for the Giants. He seems to be the best-hitting catcher in Fresno.

I imagine that they kept Quiroz for 2 reasons :
- outright releasing a young guy that nobody claimed is considered tacky - you keep him til the end of the year if he wants to stay, and let HIM decide to leave if he doesn't. It's only cost you $5K or so (minor league players get paid very little).
- the Giants love them some vets. He has MLB experience, so he is insurance. Sabes loves that.
