I'm a bit surprised by this, with the catching situation unsettled in SF. Sanchez may have the inside track but there is no guarantee he'll stick. I guess he wanted to find an organization that thought more highly of him.

by declaring FA, he just gives himself some negotiating power. He could negotiate a higher salary if he gets called up, for example. Or a more lucrative AAA contract.

Oh, I know that he has the ability to come back if both he and the Giants want him back. However, typically, in these kinds of situations, the player goes elsewhere.
