You do still have Dean listed among the 27, while also listed in "significant minor league adds"

Dean, Littell and Jones all have the ability to become minor league free agents. I would be surprised if they don't go that route.
I also misseD removing Johnson. So that puts us at 38 currently

It's a minor detail but I'm not sure of the point of claiming Dom Nuñez. Hits from the left side, good walk rate, and okay framing. I feel like the Giants could add that skill set without a 40-man roster spot.
They'll probably try to pass him through waivers later this offseason (or during spring training).

Susan Slusser:

Evan Longoria tells me that, as expected, the Giants have not picked up his option. A dialogue remains open with the team, though. Longoria is interested in seeing what free agency has to offer.

Wherever he goes they better have plenty of Ben Gay and band aids...

I find this all a bit disconcerting. I understand that the deadline to protect players is the 15th but it is a bit surprising that the Giants simply activated a bunch of guys from the 60 day IL, claimed two more castoffs and didn't purchase any contracts.

Viloria clearly indicates they're nervous about catching depth.

Strotman is a churn reliever ticket.

The Giants reinstated the following players from the 60-day IL:
RHP Sam Delaplane
RHP Anthony DeSclafani
RHP Mauricio Llovera
LHP Sam Long
RHP Gregory Santos
IF Donovan Walton
IF Colton Welker
LHP Alex Wood

The Giants roster currently stands at 40

I get that most of the catching prospects, including Bart, had very underwhelming seasons. Now doesn't seem to be the time to be collecting depth, though, through the waiver wire. Sign some guys to minor league deals.
Are they really going to not protect any of the 2022 crop of newly eligible Rule 5 guys? Teams typically, including the Giants in past years, only do one large swipe of dfa moves before adding on the new guys that they want to protect. FZ is unorthodox, so he may yet dfa more guys, but, with 5 days to go, I'm not sure that is going to happen.

I wouldn't expect Colton Welker and Sam Delaplane to occupy 40-man roster spots for long. They can be non-tendered next week, thereby becoming free agents. Keeping them on the 60-day is a small incentive that will likely motivate both to re-sign with SF on a MiLB deal.

Here's a little primer on off season deadlines:

November 15th is the last day for teams to protect guys from the Rule 5 Draft. They won't be able to add anyone from the farm after that day.
November 18th is the last day to tender contracts. I don't think teams can officially decide that they will non tender someone before that day. But the article suggests that as a possibility. The deadline, as noted, is usually a couple weeks later so maybe the FO takes advantage of that. Still, the move to go full 40 without any prospects added is very odd.

Joc just given the QO. We get a comp pick if he leaves. He gets $18.9M if he stays.
That tubba lard is staying put, and he won’t work to improve himself to earn the money.

Horrible decision.

I know I'm a broken record on this but this move will only work if Pederson becomes a full time DH. I have my doubts that will happen. If it doesn't, this was a dumb move.

Joc puts the current 40 roster at 41. That ensures 1 player will be cut today BEFORE the Rule V adds are taken into account.

I am very against this signing, even if he is restricted to just DHing/PHing against righties. We are paying a one-dimensional platoon player 20m?

Ridiculous.

I think he may be worth it if he hits like he did in 2022 and is only used as a DH. Otherwise, I completely agree on the ridiculousness of this move. He could be used solely as a DH and not hit as well as in 2022 and it could also be considered ridiculous.
This is a very dicey move. And it goes against what FZ said the team was trying to do (get younger and more athletic).

I think they WANTED him to reject the offer. But I cannot imagine a universe in which he was going to reject 19+m. That is approx 3x his previous highest salary.
