Here is all you need to know about society. MLK dies and we get a day off work for it. Jesus dies and rises from the dead, and we have to work.

Uh... the birthdays of both are actually federal holidays. And one is a historical figure in our country's history, and the other is not.

Ok, I just meant at my place of business. Left for a while and stirred up a huge debate.

The day to observe the death of Jesus is Good Friday, not Christmas. No one gets Good Friday off :(

Yes, but nobody gets off for MLK Assassination Day either.

I've seen a lot of comments on here, but has anyone actually seen it? I thought it had some interesting observations on race and attitudes towards certain individuals, like that whites are more often sympathetic towards white athletes and blacks towards black athletes, and the margins were pretty staggering.

People will almost always be more sympathetic to people of their own race. That's something that will never go away. But there is no reason to do specials on it, just causes more tension in the sports realm. I'm just really sick of blacks looking for sympathy and reparations for all they had to deal with. It's over, move on.

actually, if remember correctly, december 25th was generally celebrated by the pagans as the rebirth of the sun...and the church around the 4th century decided to call that jesus' bday....in ancient time, jesus' bday was generally celebrated on jan. 6, apr. 21, or may 1...depending on which sect you belong to

Yeah well, MLK's birthday isn't always automatically a Monday. It's the day the event is observed, not the actual date in history.

But yeah, Jesus totally wasn't born in December.

Christmas is just a day to empty your checking account, nothing more.

Maybe because it seemed kind of racist with the "here is all you need to know about our society" comment. Are you saying MLK doesn't deserve a holiday?

No need to nitpick my statement. The history is the past. Society is much more different now. No one should be treated better or feel that they need rules and amendments to better their chances anywhere, because there is no need for it in today's day and age.

No, I'm saying he's a human being, doesn't matter what color he is, and we take that day off. Big difference between MLK JR. or any other human being and Jesus Christ. Not trying to get all righteous or anything, just saying.

For your first bold - PREJUDICE people are more sympathetic towards those of their own race. Objective people look at the facts, not the race.

So because ESPN does a special that means blacks are looking for sympathy? Specials don't CREATE people's attitudes and prejudices, they are a marking measure for where we stand in society... and we still have a ways to go.

I see this thread is going to take an ugly turn, perhaps it was a bad idea... My views obviously differ from most here... so maybe a mod should just delete or something.

Jesus is historically accepted to be a significant figure of influence, but only some people consider him to be the Son of God. Just sayin'.

Some people also consider hell a bad place. Maybe you'll find it to be different. Just saying.
