I have always thought that the failure of Major Programs to actively recruit in Northern New England was a strategic mistake. Yes, we are small, but a guy in my church named Manchester Wheeler came out of Maine & played in the NFL. There are more where he came from

Jason Peter, Christian Peter, Mike Rozier, etc..

Nebraska's had a slew of players from the northeast.

Shiano did a great job of getting them to stay local at Rutgers. I firmly believe they'd be Top 10 material had he stayed there.

Penn St is the big dog in those parts and pull some good ones out of there.

I have no problem talking about the relevant past.....

But I'm 28 years old now, and what happened when I was 8 years old is irrelevant and then some.

We went from National Champs when Osborne was here to National Chumps when Callahan was here. And unfortunately it turned our program completely around and changed things. We are not the program that we were 20 years ago......and we aren't the program we were 50 years ago.

Sir, the 5 National Championships we have don't prove anything.

Those days are long gone and over. We need to stop beating our chests over something that happened decades and decades ago. These recruits weren't even swimming around in their pops' gonads yet when Nebraska was really relevant.
------
In your mind they may be long gone but the bottom line is you cannot tell me that type of success isn't achievable even here in good ol' Nebraska given the right coaches. One good turnaround year and that's all it's going to take. We wouldn't be generating the monies we have if people believed what you do. Hell, we wouldn't be on TV as much as we are if people believed what you do.

The real problem with JJMs "past" is he isn't old enough to honestly recall any of the era we had success and the protocols that were used to insure that success. If he's only 28 then his knowledge of Husker ball only goes back to about the year 2000. We've had one coach (Solich) who thought he could recruit based on our past (when he was sober enough to go recruit.) We had the Callahan era which proved a pro coach wasn't a fit at this college. And now we have the Pelini era which has shown us that coachs still have to teach/coach their postions--something that truly hasn't been done yet--during his tenure. JJMs "past" is basically frought with losing and mediocrity. He wasn't around for any of the success we had for 30 some years.

Now I'm not suggesting we go back to the "past" and solely base/build our offense around the triple option, that won't work.

But if a school like Boise State can be more competitive with the big boys than what we've done over the last 15 years....then by God it ain't our location that's killing us. We have the most ardent loyal fanbase in the country. We have some of the best if not the best facilities in the country. We just need coaching that can get us back over the hump. Does JJM even realize our program is valued more than what Ohio States is? So, we also have plenty of money to be able to do things right as well.

I have never been insulted on that level before in my entire life.

I was born in 1985 and watching and understanding Nebraska Football by the end of the 1988 season. I had the entire roster memorized name-for-name by 1992......including all backups at every position.

I was a freak. And I saw and knew Nebraska Football before it went through the real height of its glory. I remember the tears that came with the losses to Florida State in back-to-back Orange Bowls in the '92 and '93 seasons.

Derek Brown, Calvin Jones, Tyrone Byrd, Corey Dixon, Ed Stewart.....etc etc....

You don't know me.

Nice rebuttal--not. No I don't know you and I don't need to. I've forgotten more players names then you had memorized. Dennis Claridge anyone? The issues aren't how many names you know or knew it's about understanding what made our success in that era and understanding that it won't take that much to recapture it... It's also about perspective.

Those my friends are your words. In essenace you have no idea about "the past" nor apparently do you care if we ever attain it again. Over the years, almost ALL the great programs have had down periods--Alabama/FSU/Texas Oklahoma ND/OSU/USC--the list is endless. You learn from the mistakes from the present and turn around a program based on what worked in the past.

The only rut we are in NOW is the one created by our currently fealess leader (Bo). Kids will play for winners and especially winners that can coach them to be better than what they are when they enter a program. It makes no difference whther I'm talking about Nebraska football, Michigan football, or any of the other blueblood schools.

You contend that none of the 5 NCs we have mean squat now and yet it's the exact oppositie of your argument. We won those 5 at a school in the middle of nowhere with crappy weather and only a chance for kids to do great. We did it twice about a quarter of a century apart and we're due again. And quite frankly, I'm not that all fired up for the NCs. Unlike you, I'm confident we can be competitive as long as we have a coaching staff that will allow us to do so. The NCs would be just a bonus.

So big red you think we get over the 4 loses? I think its crazy that last season could have been real ugly win/loss wise.

So do we need a coaching change? And if so who would you like to have come in. Me I like Bo.

You want to talk about the past anyone remember Eric crouch?

Every year I am the most optimistic fan on this board. I take a lot of shit for believing that we can still be successful here.

You should probably know that before you continue to run your mouth.

But seriously though.......you think some 17 year old kid in Florida who is trying to finger fuck girls and afford rims to put on his car is really going to be wowed by the fact that we won a couple Championships before he was even born?

Get real. They're little punk kids. They don't give one fuck what we did way back when. It might help if we would have accomplished something in recent history......but the 90's are a long long long time ago for little teenage boys.

so true

this is why only way we get top recruits is if we get sexy uni wise like Oregon. or win a string of 11 game for a couple of seasons. The young kids don't care about the 90's

Almost to a person everyone here thought we stood a chance to win the B1G. Mind you we ended up with a lot of injuries but I just don't see any of the assistants doing that good of a job of "teaching" these kids.

I have no real burning desire to talk about the past other than it shows that we could win all the marbles without a massive amount of talent.

Coaches? First of all any I list doesn't mean I think we can get them, but they show that they can hire assistants to coach players up and for the most part have teams that are dominate on the front lines (offense and defense). In other words, pound the shit out of your opponents. IMO, we seem to be trying to be a finesse team rather than pounding on people. Plus good clean tackling.

Franklin @ PSU
Petersen @ Washington
Shaw @ Stanford
Patterson @ TCU

All have proven they can take "lesser" talent and be competitive with just about any team they face.

Fundamentals, discipline, conditioning--Those three simple words I think are lacking from the lexicon of our current crop of coaches. I've read that teams can take on the personality of it's head coach--I think this is true of the Huskers. Pelini is undisciplined and the teams plays like it.

Now will we have another 4 loss year next year? Take a good long hard honest look at our schedule and tell me otherwise. The sad thing is even now we have the talent to do better.
