The Leafs have more offensive depth this year but their defense still wasn't very good

Anywhere on the ice. The first line has no defensive abilities whatsoever. Second line is mediocre at best both moving forward and in two-way play. Jake Gardiner has become a worse player every game he's played this season. What they were smoking giving Robidas a 3 year deal is beyond me. Why is Korbinian Holzer a hockey player? And fuck me if they can get a bag of pucks for Celine and his god-awful deal.

If they can move Bozak (one of the few guys with any actual value) and JVR in the near-term, they might still have a shot at a top 5 pick, and can maybe swing a deal to get even higher and probably get first rounders for both those guys. I just hope Shanny is thinking the same thing.

Larry Brooks jumps ship from the New York Post to the Toronto Sun - I like it.

Who goes to New York in return? Steve Simmons or someone like that?

Not sure, but I do know there were a few games where Kessel was playing with Kadri. That might explain why Bozak is lower, not having to play with Kessel's non-defence-playing ass.:noidea:

It's still probably a very small sample, but I suppose it might help "explain" it. But if you don't show us the actual data, how do we have any idea?

The reason it's preferable using large samples for line/on-ice data is that in one (or a few) individual game things can happen outside the player's control... maybe they get stuck playing with the 3rd D unit a lot one game, maybe one player on the line is nursing a minor injury, maybe someone on the line just has one dreadful game for no obvious reason. Maybe there are score factors at play (it's just observational but it seems like the "1st line" plays less when the Leafs are getting blown out). Given more time these things tend to balance out better.

Well this sucks. I was looking forward to more CarLOLyle time with the Leafs.

This means the Leafs upper management is actually tying to improve? What new devilry is this??

Well, there's data showing that Kessel leads the league in shots against. So there's that?

Two weeks on and two weeks off? Hmmm. Sounds like most goal scorers in the NHL. These guys are streaky. Just about all of them.

If scoring a PPG is "not being able to count on a guy" I'll gladly not take those worries on my team.

I guess Phil was asked to switch wings and he said "No thanks" - I didn't know players had that kind of pull, usually the coach says you're switching wings and the player says ok.
