Maybe I'm reading something that isn't there. I just thought there was a tone of "why can't Nylander be a good guy like Yannick Gourde?" in some of this.

Not my side. My thought was merely that at 8-8.5 per (which is the amount the mill says he wants) is Willie really $3M per "better" than Gourde? Looking strictly at accomplishments to date. Not sure he is.

IMO careers are too short for a player to be "good guys" to favo(u)r their team. And if a Leaf fan thinks that way, then all I can say is "cough, cough, JT, cough".

Gourde's number is known of course, since he's signed right on the dotted line. What do we actually know about what Willy is asking for (and/or what the Leafs are offering him) ? Right now I see no reason not to treat the situation as if the answer to that question is "nothing".

If someone said "an unnamed NHL source says Nylander is heard to be asking for $13 million" or "Leafs are heard to be offering just $3 million" we'd quickly dismiss the report. But when the numbers sound "more believable" with the same evidence cited it seems like people give it credibility. It feels like we're rewarding the guy who writes the bullshit that just kinda sounds the truest.

It's kind of naive to think none of the leaks to this point have come from reputable sources. At some point an agent or someone from the team is going to put something out there in order to rock the boat a little bit in a stalemate like this.

So if enough reports are indicating the Leafs are somewhere around $6.5 mil and Willie is still unsigned, that can really only mean one thing and in that case enjoy the K because you're just being an idiot and there is no way I want the Leafs to cave and wind up doing this two more times next summer.

Best of luck to Frankie (who seems to have nothing but bad luck):

10 games in 15 days for the Leafs, including having gone from Toronto Friday to Boston Saturday out to LA for tomorrow night, up to SJ, back down to LA for a game in Disneyland, then back to TO, then to Carolina and Columbus before finally coming back home for 3.

That's almost as bad as that double Eastern road trip Calgary had to do a few weeks ago.

Did you read the Sun this morning? There's a Koshan article about the Leafs being linked to Montour. Do you know why Montour's name is in the article (hell, it's in the headline for Christ's sake)? It seems like it was the most common name mentioned in hypothetical, speculative trades created by a bunch of (entirely unnamed) agents and scouts that were sitting in the stands at the Canada/Russia junior thingy.

This is the kind of thing that I mean by rewarding the guy who writes the most believable bullshit. There is nothing given in the article that "links" Montour to the Leafs in any way and if the rumour involved Brandon Manning instead of Brandon Montour it would be laughed off the page, despite having the same (lack of) evidence.

Now I'm going to get to hear "they can trade him for Montour, Montour is a better person than Willy!" at the bar until this is settled.

Dave Nonis is still the biggest leaker of Leafs info? :D

/I don't know what's going on but trading him would be such a bad move. 0.5% chance they make a deal that we like. This super sucks.

Someone's salty.

I see that he also said that the Leafs should have talked to/signed all 3 forwards this past spring, at a time when only one of them was even allowed to do so. You can take the Knight out of London...

Someone's salty.

Read a bit more of what Hunter said at the PTSC. Beyond this comment he didn't really say much about Dubas or Shanny or criticize anything but he did say that he thought the best time to negotiate with the big 3 was last spring, which considering that only Nylander's negotiation window was open last spring is probably a good indicator of why he was passed over for Dubas.

FWIW, I think Hunter was probably one of the better talent evaluators in the league but whether or not Dubas is a success as a GM I’m pretty happy Hunter wasn’t given the job. Some guys are just better on the periphery.
