Most believe that the NHL is more likely to come than the NBA. If your the NHL I would think you would want to be lone dog in the town before the NBA gets here.

Don't get me wrong, I would love it to happen as I have family down in Renton and I visit Seattle quite often. I still wonder if Seattle hockey fans will be willing to pay NHL ticket prices though.

I really believe Seattle needs to secure a NBA franchise before NHL expansion really gets rolling. A NBA franchise will get arena construction moving full steam ahead. Key Arena is not feasible.

Given Stern's maneuvering behind the scenes when it looked like the Kings were going to move to Seattle I don't think the NBA wants a team in Seattle. Like I said earlier in the thread I think they always want the Seattle market available so they can use that to pressure other cities, such as Milwaukee, into building a new arena with the threat of moving their team to Seattle if they don't. I just hope that Bettman's desire to put a team in Seattle is true and that becomes the catalyst for getting the new arena built. As far as I'm concerned the NBA can fuck itself and I hope Seattle never gets another NBA team. I don't understand how people can watch such a horrible, corrupt league in the first place.

I think Seattle or Portland should get a team. Paul Allen needs to get involved in some way to make it happen.

Would love to see a team in Portland - I think it would actually work, believe it or not

Only thing that would suck about Seattle getting a team would be the annoying 7th man signs and claiming to be the loudest arena in the history of mankind.

I believe that banner was raised by Cliff Ronning ... that wasnt an awkwardly pathetic game night ceremony at all

Canucks marketing staff: "Hey Cliff we want you to raise the #7 banner"

*Cliffy gets emotional*

Cliffy: "you mean youre retiring my number"

Canucks marketing staff: "hahahahahahaha"

*Cliffy cries tears of disappointment*

Cliffy: "what time do i have to be at the rink?"

The sad reality is though that I think the NHL hopes in Seattle needs the NBA, but I don't think the NBA has to be first.

Bob Mckenzie's thoughts about expansion:

Insider Trading: Canada's bubble players, expansion, Phaneuf

Q: What the latest on NHL expansion? Where and when?
McKenzie: The NHL party line hasn't changed. There are no formal plans for expansion but if they expand and everyone assumes at some point, they're going to, the common knowledge is that Seattle is the primary target in the Pacific Northwest. The strong sense I'm getting now is that Las Vegas is second on that list behind Seattle and the NHL wants to be the first major professional sports league to put a franchise in Las Vegas. People in Quebec City may be saying, 'Hey, what about us?' Well, keep in mind, there's no rule that says if they expand, that they only expand by two teams. The possibility of expanding by three teams, with Quebec City being one of them, is at least something that will be considered. There's lots of money in expansion; over $300 million per franchise, close to a $1 billion winfall that isn't shared with the players or anyone else, just the owners.

and Puck Daddy weighs in:

Y! SPORTS

My main concern, shared by the Vegas locals I’ve spoken to about expansion, has always been about the entertainment dollar. The games are at night, competing with every conceivable entertainment option. It’s a 24-hour job cycle, too: How many fans are working when the games are being played too?

That said, the idea that an NHL team could be part of an overall package for snow bird tourists – two nights, a free buffet and a game against the Oilers! – could be an interesting work around foundational fan support.
What say you to the NHL in Vegas?

Seattle and Las Vegas??

This guy wants 2nd Toronto team in the west and Seattle:

Duhatschek: A novel idea for the NHL?s expansion woes - The Globe and Mail

Even before they settle on an owner and a wallet, Seattle meets the second criteria. It would be a geographic rival for both Vancouver to the north and the three California teams to the south. Seattle is a perfect fit into the Pacific Division as the eighth team, so whenever those formal approaches come from potential Seattle ownership group(s), Bettman, deputy commissioner Bill Daly and the rest will be all ears.

For alignment purposes, a second expansion team also needs to fit into the Western Conference – and that’s where things get tricky.

Most people believe Bettman’s affection for Las Vegas as a potential site never waned, even after the faltering U.S. economy put a lot of building projects there on hold. Las Vegas attracts tourists and has hotels with casinos that cater to high-end clients and, thus, it would seem to be a relatively easy task to sell private boxes at a game there.
Even if season-ticket sales aren’t great, there should be enough corporate support – along with the drop-in business visitors from cold-weather destinations could provide – to make it theoretically viable. (AEG, a long-time partner of the NHL’s with the Kings in Los Angeles, is set to break ground next summer on a 20,000-seat, $350-million arena on land MGM Resorts International owns between the New York-New York and Monte Carlo resorts on the strip, with a view to completing construction by the spring of 2016.)

The wild card in the entire equation is the long-rumored second team for the Greater Toronto Area, which would also represent a 17th team operating in the Eastern time zone and thus force some team to shift west?

Here’s a novel suggestion: What if you made the second team in Toronto the 16th team in the Western Conference?

This is where it gets tricky, if you expand by two teams, they would both have to be in the West - Detroit and Columbus wanted to be in the East because the travel is easier, so I can't imagine one of them moves back to the West

I know the NHL wants a team in Vegas but I can't imagine it working out

I'm not so sure about that and to be very honest I don't think a team in Vegas would work any better than one in Phoenix. In fact it probably would be worse. No way am I convinced Vegas is or has the potential to be a hockey town. It's an adult play ground wrapped around the tourist industry and the residents and tourist don't give a damn about going to a hockey game.

Good point Boss. I know if I'm in Vegas I'd rather hang out in a sports book and watch all the games than to go to a game in person. I was in Caesar's sports book a few years ago during the Mexico US Gold Cup final and the place was electric, I can only imagine what it would be like for playoff games and boxing matches - that is my type of place and I will gladly drop my coin there as opposed to going to an NHL game that happens to be in town.

Of course, the easy remedy to this is build a sports book at the NHL arena...
