My point is GM's don't see all the players the team drafts. They might view the guy taken in round 1 & that's about it. Scouts give their recommendation & the GM has to make the final decision on a player he most likely has never seen play. It's hard to blame the GM if the player the team takes is somebody he knows very little about. The draft comes down to how good your teams scouts are.
Okay, that's fair, but once again scouting is by and large assembled by the GM. He'll hire a scouting director and develop a strategy to pass on to the rest of scouting. In the end, it all falls on the GM. To excuse him if a team drafts badly for years and years is to excuse failure, and in sports that leads you on a one-way path to Oilerdom.

Don Maloney isn't any better. People forget that he inherited a very good team in the Islanders after they had a nice playoff run reaching the conference finals. Once he took over the organization went into a tailspin they've just begun to recover from.

Yep. If you're going to pin the draft on any one person the amateur scouting director is a better fit.

Which of course is why it blows my mind that Dave Morrison has survived the carnage in Toronto.

Damn it, I was in Kelowna last weekend (it was beautiful by the way), otherwise I could have provided some on the scene reports.

#Oilers to retain analytics consultant Tyler Dellow. Will work under management in 2015-16, less contact with coaching staff, post-Eakins.

Great news everyone.

Lots of rumo(u)rs floating around that the Oilers are dangling the 16th overall pick in the 2015 draft for Rangers goalie Cam Talbot.

Here's hoping they forget the "6" on the official trade sheet and trade "Overall Pick #1" for Talbot.
