Davidson: Building, Not Rebuilding

That "DNA" is going to get us another 10th - 15th overall pick.

Oh, and this:
Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella was back at practice today for the first time since suffering broken ribs in a Jan. 22 practice collision. As fate would have it. he narrowly avoided a puck about two-thirds of the way through practice. Sailed right by his ear and smacked the glass behind him. "They're trying to get me again," he said. "Maybe I should (take it personally)."

At least the ghosts of the Ohio Penitentary have turned their "Final Destination" Level anger towards someone other than the players.

What's wrong with that?

If you go over picks 5-15 in the past decade+, there isn't much of a success rate difference between 5-10 and 11-15. And if I'm Columbus with a good chunk of the team's "future" already playing regularly in the NHL I'd rather see incremental progress than flatlined tankage. It's not like they're the Leafs where a maximum of 3 guys on the current roster are considered to be in the plans for the long-range future.

After a few years, those picks will contribute, but the Jackets as they are aren't good enough to compete right now (clearly - unless of course there is nothing to play for), and they have one very big glaring hole - a new one - that isn't being filled with a #12 draft pick.

As it looks right now, that "Incremental" improvement we're talking about for next year is going to net them a 15th pick and no playoffs.

It's the Colts of the NFL. One bad season (the one they are already in) and you can land the one piece you need to fill the big hole. The other hole you had, which you filled by opening the new one, was going to be filled by default anyway.

If that big hole is a 1C, you're talking either Matthews or bust since the rest of the expected top 5 are wingers or a d-man and since the top 3 are all lottery now you can finish dead last and wind up picking 4th (as I'm half-expecting will happen to the Leafs). You can't really rely on that.

But a high enough pick (+ a spare D man or two) might land us a trade for the #1c we need if we don't go first overall.

When you are 8 games into a pesky "getting points" run that threatens your hopes and dreams, you have to do something to reverse it.

Cheer up, Marchand Jr. All the Jackets are doing is playing themselves out of a good draft pick. That win hurt us more than it hurt you.

Man, Jack Johnson's parents suck.

Bankrupt NHL defenceman Jack Johnson has accused his parents of mismanaging his finances, overspending on cars, jewelry and extending lines of credit that plunged him into millions of dollars’ worth of debt.

Now, Johnson wants his parents out of their Michigan home, a house he owns, so he can sell the property to help pay down his debts.

But Johnson’s parents are fighting back.

In a letter to a bankruptcy court judge in Ohio - marking one of the few instances where their position on their son’s bankruptcy has been made public - Kristina and John J.L. Johnson II say they signed a 50-year rent-free lease for the property with their son. They have asked a bankruptcy court judge to prevent Johnson from selling the property.

Don't look now, but the Jackets are 6-1-3 in their last 10 games.

Ahh yes, the fight for the 10th overall pick just so we can all see 43s head go all Scanners.

I have read a number of people saying playoffs are still possible, and that the Jackets should buy at the deadline.

Jack Johnson went and got himself injured, so his trade value is actually lower.
