Also, looking at Detroit's defence beyond Seider (and I know there's some Holl redemption arc'ing going on there right now but...) maybe Yzerman just kinda sucks at evaluating defence?

Not wanting to pay Hronek who he probably could've gotten for $6 mil AAV back then but then dishing out $6.4 mil to Holl & Maatta, plus $4.75 mil for Chiarot and $2.4 mil for Petry, all of whom are pretty bad, doesn't seem very logical.

My only pause here is that it keeps money open for a legit 1D should one become available and gives him some pretty easy contracts to move out if that does happen as opposed to having a decent-sized cap hit on Hronek who may not have been the best fit there anymore. If you don't think the blue line with Seider, Hronek and plugs gets you far but Seider, legit 1D and plugs will then you might as well make that move.
