Like I said, I can't find any clarification either way in the NHL rules; the language isn't explicit about whether or not ice contact is required, and I kind of wish it was.
He was offside. In every league and in every possible reading of the rule, he was offside. I would imagine the NHL rule isn't specific because every feeder league has the rule that way.
You can only deem the play onside in the sense that the linesman blew the call.
