Broncos and Kaep met on Thursday:

Source: Kaepernick, Broncos GM Elway met Thursday

Colin Kaepernick - QB - 49ers

The San Francisco Chronicle's Eric Branch reports Broncos GM John Elway met with Colin Kaepernick in Denver on Thursday.

Branch reports Kaepernick and Elway have met "at least twice since March 15." This type of meeting would normally not be allowed, but the 49ers have granted Kaepernick permission to seek a trade. The Broncos reportedly want Kaepernick to agree to around a $5 million pay cut before they will green-light a trade, but he has little reason to take a big cut with his 2016 salary now fully guaranteed. Perhaps a smaller reduction paired with some guarantees in 2017 could get a deal done. These meetings suggest there is a real chance to two sides come to an agreement, but it is still anyone's guess where Kaepernick will play this season.

I'd think with his tease demand, he'd be open to agreeing to a pay cut to help facilitate the trade. If I'm Denver I still lowball SF in what I send over.

San Francisco and Denver have the parameters of an agreement in principle on a trade for Colin Kaepernick, sources said, but before any deal can be completed, the quarterback and the Broncos still have to agree on a restructured contract, and the two sides have not been close.

It sounds like all that's left is an agreement on a contract negotiation and that's it. If that gets worked out the trade will happen.

Kaep has $11.9 million guaranteed and Denver has $2 million cap space - that is a lot of negotiation!!!!!

I hate what is being done to my team. Why would they ship Kaepernick to Denver? This coach would be the worse.

Addition by subtraction. Kaepernick is average at best, and anything for him is a good trade at this point.

Average at best? Isn't his performance now a function of the coach? It was not long ago that he was touted as one of the most promising young stars.

His descent started with Harbaugh, so scrap that. Using Tomsula is nothing but a scapegoat to the facts that make Kaepernick an average QB - poor pocket presence, spotty accuracy and a general lack of football IQ.

He was touted based on a half year of success.......trade this turd while he's worth something.

How can Denver lowball the Niners? Kap is still under contract and if the Niners want a 2nd round draft pick for Kap, then they will probably get it.

Doesn't the Niners want a 2nd round draft pick from Denver as part of the trade?

That was, from what I can gather, the starting point in a discussion for Kaepernick.

Didn't Kap take the Niners to the Superbowl? How many NFC Championship games did Kap play in. I think his success was more than just a half year.

I can't believe Elway will give up a 2nd. Maybe a 3rd. Denver has been offering a 4th.

Yes SF wants a 2nd. It's called a "negotiation".

Kaepernick had a good run in 2012. Defense was still top 5ish in 2013 and 2014, and it only got worse for Kaepernick offensively.

Yeah I agree. I don't think Elway will give up a 2nd. Nevertheless, the Niners are in the drivers seat, as they can keep Kap and see if he can fit into Kelly's offense. You're right, if I were Elway I wouldn't give up a 2nd or 3rd. A 4th sounds about right.

But from the 49ers perspective if they really have soured on him and actually think Gabbert or an ealry draft pick will be their QB and not Kaep now's their chance to get rid of him and his salary. If they keep him they risk paying $11 million just to have him riding the bench, at least now his value is at it's highest, it can only drop he has another year like last year.

Well, Keap wants out of SF and SF wants to get rid of him, two bargaining chips not working in their favor.

The Niners passing game since 2012 has been ranked like this by outsiders:

8th
21st
30th

Pretty clear decline that can't just be explained by coaching or talent deficits. But let's look at the corresponding rating system for QB's by DVOA

7th
29th
34th

As you can see here, his individually parsed rankings are just as bad if not worse. Whenever you see a sharp decline like this, the first assumption is always that the QB has simply been figured out. Yes, the Niners were an awful, awful football team, but you'd have to be making crazy excuses to erase the last two years of dumpsterfire football.

Here's a more traditional system like passer rating for giggles in the same 2013-2015 span:

*qualified passers

2013- 91.6 10th
2014- 86.4 20th
2015- 78.5 -31st; but hey, he was ahead of Andrew Luck

YPA by year:

7.69 (8th)
7.05 (22nd)
6.62 (31st)

About the only positive that you can point to from his 1.5 years of "good" play was that his solid INT% stayed very close to 2%, flat.

Given his sample of terrible play is now larger than his 2013 and 2012 samples, it increasingly appears that he is nothing more but a flash in the pan and/or a system QB.

Everyone on the niner boards has been saying this for the past year.
