being a union carpenter has its ups and downs. mad money when there is work, when the project is over, you collect unemployment and work cash jobs...which isn't bad at all. luckily for me, my wife has a state job and the medical covers us all.

I thought about getting my general contractors license, most of peers say I should get it. Right now our economy here sucks, and it wouldn't be a good time to invest and front a whole lot of money into starting my own company.

The housing boom has slowed down considerably over the past 2-3 years, but there it looks like the construction industry will pick back up again within the next 6 months and there is a lot of money being released for big projects. 6 billion rail transit system, university complexes etc.

Being a carpenter is the best.

I was in Hawaii a few months ago and there was construction EVERYWHERE. It seemed like every block had something going on. And lots of traffic from all the road work.
