Coming from my years working at an importer, my 2 cents on tariffs


What I've seen is selling price and profit is all percentage based.

if a product costs $1.00 dollar to import from China (after current duties, tariffs, import fees, freight, brokerage fees, etc.) and sells for $1.50, 50% markup applied. There are a lot of fees involved with importing beside just the product manufacturing cost.

Now add an additional 25% tariff, cost is now $1.25 (everything else remains the same for now), same 50% markup applied, new selling price is $1.88.

The tariffs are also a convenient way for companies to raises prices just because they can and blame it on tariffs. So your example of going from $5.00 to $8.00 is very feasible.

His handle is/was blindbaby.
We used to correspond on a bunch of different topics in the PF too.
Did he get banned, or just decided to not post on this site anymore?
I haven't seen him around for about a year.

Hmmm I swear I saw him recently on a chat but "recent" could be a long time ago. It seems he fell off around February of this year.

She is very misleading. 60% of our imports come from Canada not 60% of our oil consumed.
