Cody Ross Hopes For Long-Term Deal With Giants: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

I see this as both a love for the organization and him trying to capitalize on the biggest fame he'll probably ever have. He preformed on the big stage and he is trying to cash in on it. But he has also said nothing but wonderful things about the Giants since his arrival.

As quoted, "I've let them know that's what I want," Ross said. "Free agency would be cool to experience, but I know what this team is about and where it's going. We have a great thing here, and I want to stay."

He is certainly right about that, but will he be part of those future plans? With Torres and Burrell currently his other 2 likely OF mates, both of them are in question as to how long they can be effective, paticulary Torres. How long will he sustain this level of play? And there are guys in the minors, Neal, Brown, Peguero, Kiechnick, possibly Belt who could all be in the mix by 2012. There are some free agents, Grady Sizemore, Nick Swisher, David DeJesus, Michael Cuddyer, Nate McClouth.

I think that we should wait until the offsason to start disscusing a long term deal, as he has been trending in the wrong direction his last 3 years. But you run the risk of him having a better than average season and having to pay big time to keep him here.

The topic question, what should we do with Cody Ross, or what would you do?

I'd like to think that Cody hasn't peaked, but in reality, he probably has. He definitely won't see another inside fastball that doesn't knock him down for the rest of his career (unless the pitcher makes a huge mistake or didn't watch the NLCS).

This is similar to what the Sharks just had to deal with. Antti Niemi has been playing extremely well, and was going to be a free agent at the end of this season. Doug Wilson decided to lock him up for the next four years rather than risk Niemi continues his superb play and commands a higher price. I thought this was a good idea because Niemi is in his late 20s.

Ross is in his early 30s, so I wouldn't be opposed to a three year extension for him. I don't know what type of money he would request, but since he is instigating these discussions, he might be giving the Giants a discount. Even if Ross digresses (which I expect), he will remain a serviceable fourth outfielder for the length of the contract. The Giants should try to pay him as such.

I think the Niemi comparison is a good one. If we get to August and Cody has a .800+ OPS and is playing every day, we can look at a two year extension. Three years would be one too much.

Good point. Two years more than the current contract makes more sense. I was thinking in terms of three years total, but did not communicate it as such.

Or give him two guaranteed with a third year club option with a respectable buyout.
