The latest round of coaching interviews included Alvin Gentry, Larry Brown, and Scott Skiles. The Lakers are also waiting to see what Phil does in New York because Phil is holding out to talk to Derek Fisher who Phil is now interested in. Insiders in New York also believe that Bill Cartwright will be the eventual HC for the Knicks with Fisher as an assistant but the Lakers may step in to interview Fisher at some point as well. The story is on several venues including Yahoo Sports and SB Nation.

If Larry Brown wants the job, the Lakers need to hire him. Even if they have to pay "Phil money" to get him. He is the only coach out there that is on the Phil/Popovich level.

Damn!! Now I have my hopes up. :L

Thanks a lot Retro!!

Larry Brown has been at SMU for what, 3 years now? Given his history, its about time for him to be moving on.

If the Lakers hire Larry Brown will he be able to get away from the Rest Home long enough to accompany the Lakers on their road trips?

Yep, Silas. Brown is getting up there. Sort of like Dr. Jack Ramsey who is now deceased and Del Harris when we hired for the second time. If push comes to shove, Rudy Tomjonovich is still around. He has been a special consultant to Mitch since he walked away from the job a number of years hence.

Larry Brown is 73 (5 years older than Phil), but seems healthier than Phil and is still spry enough that he coaches college kids. For the Lakers young guys, he's a great teacher and for the vets, he brings that respect level that they will listen to.

So you hire Larry Brown only to have to hire another coach in a couple of years? No. The Lakers need to be looking for a little stability there.

I'm gonna agree with LRule. Larry Brown would be great, but he's old AND he has a rep for building teams up for a few years and then leaving

Larry Brown is 73 but he leaves teams after 3 to 4 years anyway. He gets bored, burns himself and his team out, and he bounces. Either way, you're not going to have him long.

The fact that he even took the interview means he has interest in the job. It's not like they drug Larry Brown kicking and screaming to LA. Having stated that, I suspect that maybe he wants to finally get a championship with still one of the most desireable positions in all of NBA basketball. He just want to turn the Lakers into a contender again even at his age and hang around long enough to get a ring. Sort of like a Dick Vermeil with the Rams.

Phil is old and has health issues, yet we all lost our minds when the Lakers didn't hire him. What if Pop (age 65) were interested? Wouldn't we all be ecstatic about that? Neither of them would be the Lakers coach for 10 more years.

Larry Brown is a Phil/Pop level coach. There is no one else out there at that level. He brings with him the instant credibility with max level FA's that everyone said D'Antoni didn't have.

Besides, when was the last time the Lakers kept the same coach for 10 years?

Eh...I wouldn't say he's on Phil or Pop's level. They're in the penthouse. Larry Brown is on the outside of the penthouse door. If he were truly on their level, he wouldn't have a career littered with multiple teams because he burns everyone out.

The Lakers announced yesterday that they will not further pursue Derek Fisher as a possible candidate for the Lakers HC position. No reason was given for the decision. One down and how many to go?
