I like it. The writing has been on the wall with him being nowhere to be found all off-season. Also, the reports of him dealing with "personal issues" last season are troubling. I feel like if you sign a $25 million contract, your "personal issues" should come second to your employer's needs/wants/expectations at that point.

We got a good run out of him for a few years, well worth the 6th (or was it a 7th?) rounder we traded for him.

I've suggested a few times that he was a nickel CB in our new scheme since he can't press worth a shit, so no surprise that an injured nickel back making $5 mill per season was cut...

Nah, he's passing along actual news, not simply sorting out any negative tidbits he can find in hopes of pissing people off. But I'm guessing you already knew that...

still a cap hit and cap savings at same time. Meow I am sure can enlighten us on this. IMO yes he needed to go, just not sure it was a blunder by management again in way the contract was. Kinda weird how a guy still had guaranteed that much $$ on contract in 4th year year? My last statement is where Meow can give insight on bad deal or not.

I feel like our cap experts may not be the experts they claim to be. I remember them claiming we would lose Casio space by doing this.

Pretty sure the cap won't be affected either way by this move. I think we are paying him same whether he's on team or not. So it's basically dead money. But one a positive in this it up a roster spot. Not sure how but I'd like see flowers in Detroit but that is really dependent on Suh I think

He signed a new deal last offseason, so it was that much $$ left after one year, of five...

Well okay then.... did not know that. Was this a complete new deal or restructure/extension type? Just wondering as that would reflect on Lewand.

I don't know if this was directed my way or not but whether it was me or someone else at the time they said it they were correct. It's entirely a matter of when the release took place.

Houston was set to have a cap hit of $4.8m this season but his contract carries $5.2m in dead money. Had they released him prior to June 1 the entirety of that $5.2m vests immediately. As a result they would have lost cap space.

By the release happening after June 1 per the cap rules only the part of that dead $ applicable to this league year applies. So his dead $ cap hit is only $1.3m. That is how the Lions created cap space for 2014 with his release.

Unfortunately the entire remainder of the unammortized dead $ on a post June 1 cut all comes due in the following league year. That means Houston will cost the Lions $3.9m in 2015.

Meow can give insight on bad deal or not.

I appreciate the vote of confidence Gandy.

My "opinion" on the contract was that it seemed pretty fair at the time it was signed. It was longer at 5 years than I was hoping for but neither the signing bonus or total amount were out of line.

His release was handled correctly. The front office got it right in this case. It wasn't a complicated business decision to make (probably more difficult of a roster decision) but they got it right nonetheless.
