Whew, almost retracted that human being comment from earlier.
That's because he's 83 years old.Everything is pointing to Utley's appeal not being heard. That being said, he'll be eligible. But my question is, was he injured on that play as well? He didn't exactly look like he was in tip top shape following his tackle.
It's a late, dirty slide. There is nothing in the rules saying you're allowed to take someone out and there are rules saying you can't interfere with the catch and throw. Tradition says it's allowable but technically it isn't. They let it go when no one gets hurt but when someone does they're going to enforce it. Unless it's a star making the slide, god forbid the suspend someone that may hurt the ratings. Which is another reason his appeal won't get heard until after today. MLB wants him in the game
No one was tuning in to see the corpse of Chase Utley pinch hit.Just to be clear. Utley isn't a star anymore but they'll want him eligible to play for the publicity and ratings

And Utley knew that when he did it. He's a 2nd baseman. He's been the victim of takeout slides before. He was just playing the game as he knew to play it, he wasn't trying to hurt Tejada. He's likely to start today because he has had success against Harvey in the past. You know he's going to be expecting retaliation all game. There's plenty of Mets fans who'd like to see someone slide into him today and turn him into a corpse

I agree, and I think Joe Torre pretty much admitted that in that interview last night. I can see if you want to change the way things are done to eliminate injuries, but it is probably something that needs to be done in the off season. If anyone is wondering how many other times Utley went into second base with the intent of breaking up a double play, I can answer that for you. ALL of them. Every single one. And I'm sure there are some that looked "worse" than that one.Utley's agent can show up at a hearing with 100 examples of this with no suspensions or fines. Baseball has to admit they're only going to so something if there's an injury and move on.
Well you were wrong!! You were the one that was "obtuse".I was trying to help the guy trying to discuss the current topic with you. He had no idea how obtuse you are.
Did you notice that he didn't even try to touch the base with his left hand?View attachment 39582
quite funny when Murphy didnt get suspended for the same slide earlier against the dodgers
Did you notice that he didn't even try to touch the base with his left hand?
Probably the best post of the day!!!I agree, and I think Joe Torre pretty much admitted that in that interview last night. You can call it a dirty play but there are guys like Utley and others who were taught to break up the DP at all costs and have done this for years and nothing has been done so why would you expect them to stop?
I guess unfortunately for him they are making Utley into a villain or scapegoat, but to the casual fan who thinks that Utley was trying to hurt Tejada or he was just trying to make a name for himself by doing something in the playoffs, I'm telling you that is not the case. It could be the 8th inning of a game where his team is down by 8 runs on a last place team and he would probably do the same thing in that situation. That's one of the reasons a lot of people like him as a player- he actually acts like he gives a shit in situations where some players don't. Hell, I remember a game either last year or this year where the Phillies were getting killed (yeah, I know, Which one?) and Sandberg was trying to save his pitchers and he had Jeff Francouer or someone come in and pitch an inning or two. You could see Utley was visibly pissed at the manager because he thought he was making a joke of the game, lol. So yeah, he is hardcore, old school or whatever but he is not trying to hurt anyone.

Yeah and Utley was close enough to at least try to touch second base with his slide.yup, one of the reasons that i posted the pic...
I also wonder how many mets fans were calling this one dirty,or were they saying its just part of the game?Did you notice that he didn't even try to touch the base with his left hand?
That's a good point!! Let us hear from the "true" Met fans!!I also wonder how many mets fans were calling this one dirty,or were they saying its just part of the game?
Yeah, what's your point?Wait, Oldtimer and Bravesfan are both agreeing with me? Let me read through my post again to make sure I got it right.
Well I guess the Phillies/Braves fan rivalry has cooled off a little anyway--the 2015 season was humbling for both teams.
