The Miles Austin cut thread got me thinking about the cap and what not and how I could explain it to the majority of you in a manner most would be able to understand and follow from a simplistic yet logical standpoint. This is what I came up with. Below is a chart of individuals who would save us money on the cap, with the majority of whom wouldn't carry on future dead money i.e. 2015 cap hit; as well as are dead weight players on the roster going into 2014. In otherwords individuals who will and should be replaced come 2014 by a younger, less expensive option with more potential.
.) Nate Livings- This guy had a far better year than most gave him credit for last year; however that does not excuse him from his second offseason with injury. He is only getting older and Ronald Leary is looking like a realistic, bette option at this point for the future of this team. The cut of Livings in 2014 saves this team about 1.5MM next season.
.) Mackenzy Bernadeau- This guy was probably the best Center we had last year, and that was my hope for him rather than going back and playing Guard once again where he struggled in 2012 and probably will not start in 2013 (this season). At this point he is a swing interior Olineman a role in which Cook also can play. Mac B will be replaced on this team next season and the cut will save the team about 1MM in space next season.
.) Orlando Scandrick- This guy has a lot he must do to stay on the team next season. Webb is the favorite to take his spot next season; and while Scandrick won't be cut pre June 1st 2014 he should be cut post June 1st 2014, for a savings of about 4MM on the 2014 cap and a carry over of about 3.5MM in dead money onto 2015 cap which still would be a savings of about 3.5MM against his 7.1MM cap figure in 2015.
.) Kyle Orton- The guy is a great back up, but at almost a 5MM cap hit in 2014 we will not be able to afford him. The cut will save us about 1MM in 2014.
.) Jay Ratliff- I will say this about Ratliff, he is on the bubble for next season, and if he does not prove his worth this season and stay healthy he will be cut and his replacement will be drafted or will be Brandon Bass. The cut of Rat will save Dallas about 1MM in cap space 2014.
.) Jeremy Parnell- For a guy who had a chance to be a starter this year he sure has let not only this pass him by, but also the possibility of being on this roster next season pass him by. Parnell can be cut to save the team roughly 2MM in cap space 2014; and for a team that will probably need it going into next season the move is more than justified unless Parnell shows up and changes minds this season.
.) Phil Costa- With Frederick being the future at Center, or so it appears, a team with cap issues like us heading into 2014 won't be able to afford a backup Center that cost slightly south of 2MM against the cap in 2014. Unless Costa can prove his worth this season and gain a starting spot he is gone which will result in a savings of nearly 2MM in cap space on the 2014 cap.
.) Doug Free- Believe it or not, Free may justify his slightly north cap hit of 6MM this season, if this is the case the same could be said about next year where his cap figure will be the same; however if this is not the case the team can cut Free to save about 3MM in space come 2014.
As I get more time I will go over a more detailed plan in which I believe will help the team get under the cap as well as keep its younger players, and not hurt us in future years as much.
