I have know idea how many teams are making money. I know the Rangers/Knicks are adding a bunch of seats at MSG & are going to charge an absolute fortune for them.

The problem the NHL is facing but doesn't seem to realize it is teams like Phoenix & Atlanta amongst others are in serious trouble. The stability of the league should come first. We know that isn't going to happen though.

For a butchered scouting department the Sabres have done quite well in recent years.

The Islanders don't even have an assistant GM anymore. So their scouting department is a big ??

I just wish they would keep the fans in mind when making some of these moves. I mean the ave fan. Like you said they are adding seats at MSG and you know damn well the average fan probably will not be able to afford them. Toronto is the same way if you see a game from the ACC and watch the first few minutes of the second and third periods the lower prime seats are empty for the first five mintes because the suits are still sipping their drinks in private clubs.

The place is dead because most of the "fans" that would love to be there can't afford to be there. When the Leafs play here Sabres fans make a fortune selling their tickets to Leafs fans because it's the only way they can see their team play.

Its sad that the fans take it up the ass so these rich basdards can get richer.

Do you really think the Canucks are going to be able to resign all 3?

Ehrhoff - is the priority. From $3.1m this year, I think (hope) it can be done in the mid $4m range to bring him inline with Hamhuis.

Salo - might retire, but i think he's got another year left in him. Because of his injury, he is eligible for a bonus laden contract, which would push some cap hit off until the following year. I think he comes back at $2m or under, anyways.

Bieksa - is the one I think we might lose (pending Salo's decision).... but folks have been saying he's out the door for three years now. $4 m seems to be the range we are paying top 4 d-men - maybe we get a discount because he didn't earn his last contract ($3.5m) for most of the duration of it. :noidea:

As mentioned, Tanev is NHL ready right now - so he can step in for someone. More of a mobile, puck mover than a cruncher, though. He's got 2 more years at $900k, which helps.
maybe we find a way to move Ballard (he's got a no trade, so we'd need his consent), as rightly or wrongly, AV doesn't seem to have much confidence in him... that doesn't jibe with a $4.2m long term contract.

the only other key pieces to re-sign are Jannik Hansen (RFA, due for a good raise from $825k), and to a lesser extent Tanner Glass (can't believe I'm calling him key, but he's played well this year. up from $625k, but still 4th line $$$).

Hodgson will also be a full-timer, at $1.67m

lol.. I edited my post to include that thought at the same time you mentioned it.
- the risk to that is if you can't do it, you've got a player who knows he isn't wanted on the books for a long, long time.
- potential upside would be he plays better so we DO want him at that price.

true but at the same time I do think he will be better next year ... the guy was trying to be Sami Salo this year with all the injuries. Alberts ended last year as public enemy #1 in canucks fans eyes and worked his ass off to come back stronger and better to start this past regular season

Id like to see Bieksa re-signed at 4 mill and a 6+ mill offer sheet for Shea Weber at the level just before the multiple first round picks compensation kicks in (let Salo and Ehrhoff walk)

Erhoff is the Canucks biggest problem. If they believe 4 million will get it done they better do so before July 1st. I wouldn't be surprised if some team offers him 4.5 to 5 million per.

Bieksa isn't going to give the Canucks a discount if his agent believes he can get more on the open market.

since he hasnt said this publically, its equally possible he does what Hamhuis does and rejects more money on the open market to sign in Vancouver

The Canucks need to keep Bieksa just as the token whipping boy (like JayBo in Calgary).

quick guesstimate work on capgeek's calculator. assumptions:
- Manny is back
- Salo is not (also works if Ballard is moved)
- random utility forward - I used Higgins as example/placeholder, at $1.2m. I don't think he'll have teams beating down his door.
- my salary estimates a indicated with a *

I think it depends on the team offering more money. The Islanders offered more money to a few Defenseman last July. Each one turned them down.
