The NHLPA has told agents that the union projects a salary cap of approximately $62.2 million next season if the players vote to trigger the 5-percent escalator, Slap Shots has learned.

That represents an increase of $2.8 million from the current $59.4 million cap, or approximately 4.7 percent. This means that, 1) the NHL's "record" revenues have not increased by the 5 percent the players voted to bump the cap for this season; and, 2) the cap would remain flat or even decrease slightly for the first time if the players opt not to adopt the inflator for next season.

Looks like the Islanders will have to spend a bit more to reach that ever-elusive cap floor. Maybe. The cap can be really confusing.

Time to bring Chico Resch out of the broadcast booth and back on the ice...10 years, $40 million. Problem solved.

As the cap rises, so do the salaries. All it really does is hurt the teams struggling to reach the cap floor.

It should still be around $45 million. Then players would be signed to contracts no larger than $9 million per year, and every type of player would be paid less. The increasing cap sets a market for grinders getting paid upwards of $2 million per year, and that's a tough investment.

Everytime I see that Matteau OT goal, it makes me sad. The 1940 chant was one of the best if not the best in sports.
I apologize for our part in ending that.
it's the Nathan Lafayette post that still haunts my dreams

me too Q. we lose at least one of our d-men otherwise (though Tanev is waiting in the wings on an entry level deal).

True but when you have bad long contracts it kind of waters them down as well.

That's why you don't sign long bad contracts. Long contracts internally and short ones on the free agent market is the best way to operate.

EDIT: And by long contracts internally I mean a max of 8 years for a young stud (23 years old or younger).

Red Light Ricky is already making 4.5 so we've got the money part of it covered. Of course how many games he'll play is the 4.5 million dollar question.:L

Does this mean the Cap floor goes to 47 million?

Do you really think the Canucks are going to be able to resign all 3?

So this is how much of an increase since the lockout? The NHL reminds me of people that win the lottery and have never had money and are broke 10 years later.

Keep raising the cap and we get closer to a lockout again. Even the NFL that makes way more than the NHL was warned of this when they signed the last CBA and thought they would be just fine.

These people need GOOD financial advisers Big market or small market it's bad for the future and I think they are headed in the wrong direction AGAIN !!!.

Just because the cap is at a certain number doesn't mean the teams have to be at that number. They can do what Nashville & a few others do. Set their own cap. My team isn't going to be above the cap floor much until Chuck knows where the team is going to play after 2015. So it really has no impact on my team.

How much more money do you think Pagula is going to spend this offseason?

It would be different if all of the teams were making money but as we know that is not the case so the playing field will be tilted even more. Any business that makes money doesn't open up the vault after a couple of good years and throw money out the window. Companies that do that go under in the lean years. The fact is the players will not say "Oh the NHL lost money last year so here is 15% of my check back" It doesn't work that way and history has PROVEN it doesn't work that way. That is a fact in any business.

As far as Pegula goes , as he promised he is going to spend money on rebuilding the scouting department that was butchered by the last two previous owners. He is already very involved with the community and obviously has the players pumped up because they know they are working for an organization that is committed to winning and not just the bottom line.

Pegula is a smart man and will spend the money on the players that the team needs but will not be stupid about it.

I hope I answered your question because it seems like I babbled a bit.

I have know idea how many teams are making money. I know the Rangers/Knicks are adding a bunch of seats at MSG & are going to charge an absolute fortune for them.

The problem the NHL is facing but doesn't seem to realize it is teams like Phoenix & Atlanta amongst others are in serious trouble. The stability of the league should come first. We know that isn't going to happen though.

For a butchered scouting department the Sabres have done quite well in recent years.

The Islanders don't even have an assistant GM anymore. So their scouting department is a big ??
