I feel like this is just the Giants' way of justifying not trading him, at this point.

Ruf for Davis, apparently straight up deal.

Why? Not that Ruf was a future piece, but Davis looks pointless. I guess he will be pencilled in as the backup plan for 3B next year? He is under team control through ‘24
Makes Belt movable. He plays 1b and LF too.

Ok…. No idea who any of those guys are, but even assuming they are low level lotto tix, I like the deal now.

But he has no bat. No idea about his defensive proficiency. But he is probably not the key piece. This one will take a minute to analyze.

haven’t looked at him yet, so I don’t have an opinion as of yet.

I met his dad a few years ago at the Arizona Fall League. Kid grew up in the Sacramento area, and his dad and I were on the same flight. The dad and JD's uncle were going to surprise him with a visit. He was very surprised, and unfortunately went 0 for all the time his dad and uncle were there with multiple errors, some of the bonehead variety. JD's dad was glum as we got on the plane to return to California. When we got off the plane, he checked his phone and got this huge grin. I asked him what was up, and he said JD hit two doubles and a homer that day. Figures.

I believe JD was originally in the Astro system. Evidently has a lot of power.

I haven’t seen these names mentioned anywhere yet, but I will take your word for it for the time being

If that is truly the deal, the Giants will need to make room on the 40 for Szapucki. I would guess Proctor gets DFA’d (not seriously, but seriously)

I like Davis but his 2022 has been brutal. Looks like a "hope for better production in a new location" swap.

I really like this deal. Hate to see Ruf leave, but he was a very minor piece. To this kind of haul in return is very surprising.

His history shows he is better. ‘22 looks like an aberration. But the prospect package alone would have made me happy with the deal.

I would be surprised if this deal is truly just Ruf for Davis and 3 prospects. Guess we'll see. If so, it may make up for some of the "dumb" moves FZ has made recently.

MLB Trade Rumors says this about Szapucki:

"In Szapucki, the Giants get a lefty with a pair of big league appearances to his name. Szapucki has mostly operated as a starter in the minors, posting a strong 21.6 K-BB% in 64 Triple-A innings this year. Prior to last season, Baseball America rated him as a 45-grade prospect, saying he can “land three pitches for strikes,” and needed to recover his velocity after spending 2020 at the Mets’ alternate site. Szapucki has indeed done so, working at 90.9 miles per hour in his lone 2021 MLB appearance but pitching at 95.1 in a brutal May 25th outing at San Francisco in which he surrendered nine earned runs while recording only four outs. Apparently Giants brass liked what they saw in that outing, despite their hitters beating up on Szapucki with four home runs.":twitch:

Maybe Castro is going to the Muts?
