Rumor is Patriots are considering offering Malcolm Butler to New Orleans for Brandin Cooks. I understand the logic here, but wouldn't Butler be worth more here? Like at least shouldn't the Saints be sweetening the offer here a little?

I agree that they're not terribly far off. But Butler is higher on the list of best CB's than Cooks is for WR's. And also I believe both are on the final years of their contracts, but Butler is likely significantly cheaper for that year. I just think combined that the Saints should have to add a sweetener in there. Even just a late-round pick or a draft pick swap or something.

I read Butler and #32 for Cooks and #42.
Really? So the Patriots are adding to the Butler/Cooks straight up deal? I don't get it. *Shaking Head*

Me neither. The Patriots are one of my favorite teams and I just don't think this is a good move. Brady will do good with any receiver...no need to give up one of the best corners in the league straight up for an above-average receiver.

Well for two of Brady's last few years Cooks will be a bargain financially.

Butler is going to get paid. Pats have tried to get him signed to an extension for a while with no success. At this point, they need to get what they can.

If they pull this one off, combined with signing Gilmore and trading for Allen to replace the too expensive Bennett, the Patriots are making quality moves to keep their roster moving forward.

I mean, I don't really doubt the Pats know what they're doing. It just seems like they're getting the short end of the stick on this one.

They've already replaced him with Gilmore. At this point, Butler is a desirable trade chip which can get teams past that 1st round pick requirement to sign him.

I have mixed emotions. I love the Butler story as it has unfolded. It's beyond feel good.

But he should be a Patriot.

So as nice as it is to sign Gilmore, it is a lot to pay a guy who has never even sweat blood for the team before.

I would love to just keep both and not do the trade for Cooks. Plus I think it gives Malcolm Mitchell more looks in the offense and I like what I saw from him. Hogan can stretch the field anyway.

Agreed. That would have been a very nice secondary. It was nice thinking about for a half a day. I'm not sure how big an upgrade Cooks will be for us. It's not like we don't have a nice group of receivers as it is.
