I was thinking of that myself, but it's a fine line. Suppose by doing this we end up with a stud starter in Nix and a stud back up in Wilson? That's a huge benefit...possibly for years after Patrick would have been gone anyway. I loved Patrick as a player but we have to just move on.

We have so many WR's after we get done with the PS that we can depend on. I love Patrick like everyone else but he is the same type of WR as Josh Reynolds and the youngster (not as young as a normal rookie) but Devaughn Vele.

I get it. Patrick is 30 coming off two major injuries.. I guess we have to project here a bit and not go off the great quarter he had vs the Packers. I think the sad thing is for Patrick is that Payton basically moved on in the offseason with the Reynolds signing and I don't blame Payton you can't recover if you make the move too late.... But that really hurt Patrick as you only want so many possession WR's on a roster , the others have to do something different and that is what separates a guy like Troy Franklin who didn't have as good of a PS but has more upside and more potential and given our current WR situation we can wait on him.

Moving on from Patrick also opens things up more for Mims to go full throttle. You can only keep so many WR's and it when it comes down to the end spot they have to be different from the others or excel on special teams.

I love the youth movement on this Broncos roster. If all goes according to plan, they will grow together and largely be together for a number of years. I'm glad Payton (and Paton) are taking this approach. No more trying to buy the playoffs by bringing in aging veterans (PFM, and a few others the rare exception).

The Broncos are going to be fast, explosive and ferocious at some point. Bring on the season.

Payton is really making the roster his. Last year felt like half his team, half Hackett/Fangio's....

Now it feels like Payton's team.

There is some very light buzz that Tim Patrick could end up back on our PS.

Broncos said to be looking at ILB and OLb on waivers.

I think Devon Key has been told he may be bumped off the 53 tomorrow.

Here is our 53

Broncos 53-man roster

Quarterback (3): Bo Nix, Zach Wilson, Jarrett Stidham

Running back (4): Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estime, Blake Watson

Wide receiver (5): Courtland Sutton, Josh Reynolds, Marvin Mims, Troy Franklin, Devaughn Vele

Tight end (4): Adam Trautman, Greg Dulcich, Lucas Krull, Nate Adkins

Offensive tackle (5): Garett Bolles, Mike McGlinchey, Alex Palczewski, Matt Peart, Frank Crum

Interior offensive line (4): Ben Powers, Quinn Meinerz, Luke Wattenberg, Alex Forsyth

Cornerback (6): Patrick Surtain II, Ja’Quan McMillian, Riley Moss, Damarri Mathis, Levi Wallace, Tremon Smith

Outside linebacker (4): Jonathon Cooper, Baron Browning, Nik Bonitto, Jonah Elliss

Inside linebacker (4): Alex Singleton, Cody Barton, Justin Strnad, Levelle Bailey

Safety (5): P.J. Locke, Brandon Jones, Devon Key, JL Skinner, Keidron Smith

Defensive line (6): D.J. Jones, Zach Allen, John Franklin-Myers, Malcolm Roach, Jordan Jackson, Eyioma Uwazurike

Specialists (3): Wil Lutz, Riley Dixon, Mitchell Fraboni

NOTES- Lil J and Burton will sign to our PS as we don't have to have them go through waivers. Both will be much like Lil J last year elevated early but a way to save roster spots for other young players we don't want to risk through waivers.

Seems like all the other bubble players were told they made the 53. One guy who nobody claims has officially made the 53 is Devon Key.

I think Key could be conditional on if we claim anyone tomorrow off waivers. Not officially told he made it yet .

I think most likely to be claimed tomorrow would be an OLB or S.

Thomas Incoom ???

Every head coach should get three years to adjust the roster. We should see plus results of Payton of on the right track. Next year he goes full tilt boogie.

A pretty good read on the Bronco's UDFA guys on the roster from the last two years

Love Paton's mindset on these three UDFA rookies. I would say that George Paton has survived the Russell Wilson debacle. Outside of that monumental mistake, he's been a solid GM, in my opinion. Seems like the coach and GM have a great working relationship and it shows with their personnel decisions the last two years.

We will basically elevate Humphrey and Burton off the PS next week and take advantage of a full roster. Probably move them up to the 53 after we run out of elevations for them. (Well Burton at least) Humphrey will probably come and go off the 53 when his elevations run out much like last year.

I am sure Franklin and or Vele will be inactive early on ad Humphrey will be dressing on game day...

Just can't risk waivers on certain players you like long term. I think nobody does a better job in the NFL then Sean Payton with keeping everyone he really wants. He knows how to work the system.

I really like what they have done with this roster and how they have moved to a young hungry group. Would I have loved to have seen Tim Patrick make the team? Yes, but I totally get why they did what they did.

One thing this roster also tells me is that Payton/Paton are very secure in their jobs and not expected to do anything monumental this year in order to assure job security. That in turn tells me that Penner is fully in charge and not acting like a meddlesome owner which is fantastic. Give Payton/Paton another year, another offseason and then we need to start expecting results. A slow build is required in the NFL, much like the Lions have done and continue to do. We may have some growing pains this year, but should finally on a track to rebuild this organization back into a top ten organization in the NFL from the top down much like we had when Bowlen was at the top.

I believe Patrick and Sean Payton have known from the beginning - that Patrick probably won't make the roster. What the Broncos did in service to Tim Patrick was keep him as a starter - feature him in the offense - and set him up for some good film for his next team. I see that as Sean Payton classy.

Another thing to keep in mind is the Denver Defense has transitioned from the Vic Fangio's - web of zone coverages and disguises and blitzes to a defense that allows more player instinct - encouraging taking good risks for turnovers - more man coverage and more blitzes. Younger players fit this profile of defense well - you don't have to train up and practice - instinctive play.

We shall see on VJ's defense. Shakiest coach on the staff so a bit of a prove it year IMO.
