I was thinking of that myself, but it's a fine line. Suppose by doing this we end up with a stud starter in Nix and a stud back up in Wilson? That's a huge benefit...possibly for years after Patrick would have been gone anyway. I loved Patrick as a player but we have to just move on.
We have so many WR's after we get done with the PS that we can depend on. I love Patrick like everyone else but he is the same type of WR as Josh Reynolds and the youngster (not as young as a normal rookie) but Devaughn Vele.
I get it. Patrick is 30 coming off two major injuries.. I guess we have to project here a bit and not go off the great quarter he had vs the Packers. I think the sad thing is for Patrick is that Payton basically moved on in the offseason with the Reynolds signing and I don't blame Payton you can't recover if you make the move too late.... But that really hurt Patrick as you only want so many possession WR's on a roster , the others have to do something different and that is what separates a guy like Troy Franklin who didn't have as good of a PS but has more upside and more potential and given our current WR situation we can wait on him.
Moving on from Patrick also opens things up more for Mims to go full throttle. You can only keep so many WR's and it when it comes down to the end spot they have to be different from the others or excel on special teams.
