I love how Payton works the PS rules and this roster the past two years. I feel like a kid on Christmas day....

Sad you didn't get everything you wanted but happy with what you got. ;)

I haven't seen that we cut Devon Key yet..

It sounds like we will sign Lil J and Burton to the PS and elevate them for Week 1.

Remember, vested vets don't go through waivers which is what we did with Lil J last year to trim down the roster and we released Burton and Purcell to place others on IR. (Didn't have to do that this year as only Mathis went to IR) and we can now add two players to IR before cuts that can return.

Sounds like Nachami was waived/injured so he won't be back once healthy.

Payton working that roster.

Here is our 53

Broncos 53-man roster

Tight end (4): Adam Trautman, Greg Dulcich, Lucas Krull, Nate Adkins

Offensive tackle (5): Garett Bolles, Mike McGlinchey, Alex Palczewski, Matt Peart, Frank Crum

Interior offensive line (4): Ben Powers, Quinn Meinerz, Luke Wattenberg, Alex Forsyth

Cornerback (6): Patrick Surtain II, Ja’Quan McMillian, Riley Moss, Damarri Mathis, Levi Wallace, Tremon Smith

Outside linebacker (4): Jonathon Cooper, Baron Browning, Nik Bonitto, Jonah Elliss

Inside linebacker (4): Alex Singleton, Cody Barton, Justin Strnad, Levelle Bailey

Defensive line (6): D.J. Jones, Zach Allen, John Franklin-Myers, Malcolm Roach, Jordan Jackson, Eyioma Uwazurike

Specialists (3): Wil Lutz, Riley Dixon, Mitchell Fraboni

NOTES- Lil J and Burton will sign to our PS as we don't have to have them go through waivers. Both will be much like Lil J last year elevated early but a way to save roster spots for other young players we don't want to risk through waivers.

Seems like all the other bubble players were told they made the 53. One guy who nobody claims has officially made the 53 is Devon Key.

I think Key could be conditional on if we claim anyone tomorrow off waivers. Not officially told he made it yet .

I think most likely to be claimed tomorrow would be an OLB or S.

I can’t lie, looking at the 53, I would’ve preferred the value Patrick provided over keeping an insurance 3rd string QB…

Maybe they wanted to sweat out a deal for Wilson. Can Patrick be claimed or a free agent?

@listopencil We got our wish.

Even though I was ok with Burton because of his special teams play we save a roster spot as Adkins will serve as FB/ TE.

and on the reverse we both have a sad moment of Lil J and Brandon J, neither making it. All the debate and neither make it... With the fact that Blake Watson makes it bc we kept 5 WR's over 6 I am ok with it. There is the trade off.

I figure we will keep 3 WR's on the PS. Here is to Lil J and Brandon J making it to our PS to keep us both happy! ;)

One thing I have learned with Payton is he likes to use PS spots for WR's as there are so many good WR's in this league he can get away with it to save roster spots and elevate WR's when needed. With the new rules the PS is more a part of the team then before.

Yeah. Weeks and weeks ago I would have valued Lil'j over Vele. But I saw Vele make plays in the preseason. And he looks like the second coming of Tim Patrick out there. So if they are only keeping 5 then we have to be ok with this.

I'm telling you though.. Denver can use Lil J like he is on the 53 much like last year. This is why I kept saying I saw him as a cut. No knock on him but a guy like him you can take advantage of the roster spot.

Lil J doesn't go through waivers.. He and Payton are true to each other.. You can cut him, sign him to the 53, elevate him 3 times without having to move him to the 53.. Good to have players like this.
Don't have to worry about him signing with someone else and he has no reason to leave Payton as he has a steady job under him.

He is basically on the 53 and is off and on active.

Mike Purcell was used like this?

Mike Purcell was used like this?

No. Purcell was always on the 53. However, the last two years we did release him during cuts as he didn't have to go through waivers , then we added a player to IR and re-signed him back to the 53.

Now we don't have to do that as we can place two on IR to return before we cut down to 53. We only had to do it with one this year (Mathis)

Now, if we had 3 to place on IR like we did the last year then we would have had to cut one player and re-sign them after the 53 was done.

Last year we cut Quinn Bailey, Purcell and Fabian Moreau and placed Alex Palczweski, K'Waun Williams and PJ Locke on IR then re-signed those 3 back to the 53 (none had to go through waivers so they agreed to it)

Year before we cut Purcell, Eric Tomlinson and placed Ojemudia and Dulcich on IR then re-signed Purcell and Tomlinson to the 53 (neither had to go through waivers)

So Purcell always seemed to be a good sport about doing stuff like that.

Some notable former Broncos cut today including Kareem Jackson. Nothing shocking.

I was thinking of that myself, but it's a fine line. Suppose by doing this we end up with a stud starter in Nix and a stud back up in Wilson? That's a huge benefit...possibly for years after Patrick would have been gone anyway. I loved Patrick as a player but we have to just move on.

I love the youth movement on this Broncos roster. If all goes according to plan, they will grow together and largely be together for a number of years. I'm glad Payton (and Paton) are taking this approach. No more trying to buy the playoffs by bringing in aging veterans (PFM, and a few others the rare exception).

The Broncos are going to be fast, explosive and ferocious at some point. Bring on the season.

I predicted numbers by position a while ago. Not a list of players, just how many of each I thought we'd carry. It was pretty close. I had 2 QB's rather than 3. I had 6 WR's rather than 5. I had 3 TE's rather than 4. I had 5 CB's rather than 6.
