I think if we draft Rypien I think it is to be a backup with potential upside. I don't think at this time he projects as a franchise QB. He could become that. No one thought Brady was going to be what he turned out to be, but a backup with upside seems reasonable. The NFL is more driven by QBs today then when Brady was drafted so those backups with potential will go higher then the the 6th round.

Also, I get it takes a couple of years of trading out to hit the jackpot all the same if you are not trying you are not winning you just keep trading until you get your QB.

Do you see us drafting in top 10 again next year?

Unfortunately, I worry that the Broncos are headed for an 8-8 season and drafting in the middle of the pack. Of course a lot can change, as we haven't even seen free agency or the draft yet.

To be honest I very rarely believe that the Broncos will not make the playoffs at this time of year. I feel that this team has underachieved the last 2 years and they had the talent to play with and beat the top teams in the league. Last year the team took a big step into the right direction, but patience ran out and I am concerned that we might be taking a step backwards again with inexperience Fangio has as an HC and Scangarello as an OC. I think the defense will take a step forward though as I have a lot of confidence in Fangio and Donatell.

If everything goes well I think the Broncos could win the West and or they could be picking in the top 10. Either way if the Broncos can stock pile some extra picks it would give the team additional resources to move up for the QB they want next year, or use the picks to acquire additional talent.

This thought though means you also miss on quite a few guys. The Browns for example yes finally got their guy in Mayfield. They also the last couple of years before that passed on Carson Wentz when they traded back in 2016. In 2017 they had every opportunity to select Trubisky, Mahomes, and Watson. All better starters than the Browns have had in ages. I'm sure they are glad they have Mayfield now but they have delayed their rebuild for years just waiting for that QB and have seen time after time when they traded back those players do very little for their franchise.

I am not a fan of the way the Chiefs did it either. They gave up a ton of picks to get Mahomes. It worked out for them, but it doesn't always work out and if you give up numerous picks you had better be sure that they are the right guy. I am hoping Elway listens to the new offensive staff as they can't do any worse then Elway has.

The NFL is a risk/reward game. The Eagles for example traded up for Wentz and well that worked out pretty well for them. Rams traded up for Goff and again turned out pretty darn good. Rarely is a team in a position to get their QB at the top of the draft. Most have to trade up knowing if it doesn't work out lots of people get fired.

And I completely understand why that would make some Bronco fans gun shy about taking a QB unless they are a can't miss prospect. The odds of us getting one of those guys even if we trade back some picks and try to accumulate picks is still slim. Over the next few drafts I would say Lawrence is the only guy that people can point to and feel pretty good about his potential. The rest there are a lot of question marks. So to me if their guy is there at 10 or even if they have to trade up a bit to get him then by all means keep pulling that trigger until we get our guy. I can get behind the franchise that continues to try and solve the issue rather than being the Browns and trying to get cute and trade back all the time and getting nothing in return.

I know they took Manziel and Weeden but both of those guys were in the 20's where rarely does a QB work out. Seems like the sweet spot is those top-10 picks and then the 3rd round.

Wentz might be good who knows.Mahomes Is a flash at this point. My guess next year teams will have his number. We won an SB against a flash like Mahomes

Mahomes will get shut down this year market down. We will give the tinplate twice a year. But NE and several teams already have a clue.

I mean....obviously Mahomes isnt going to average 50Tds and 8.8YPA for the rest of his career but teams keyed in on his tendencies from week 10 on. It was actually the Cardinals that made the playbook. Mahomes will do his damage but he will probably also take 2-5 sacks a game if the other team is competent.

Thinking that Mahomes regressing seems like a weird place to focus, though. The Chiefs probably have the 2nd worst defensive roster situation in football right now (ahead of only Oakland imo) and this years secondary draft is really, really below average. If youre the Chargers or Broncos then thats where you have to win.

The decline of Patrick Mahomes isn't a very common prediction around here. Conversely, most are focused on how in the heck the Broncos compete with a Mahomes led Chiefs team for the next decade.

I meant by comparing Mahomes to Newton. Apples and oranges, they're nothing alike.

you are going to see NFL D's snuff him out this year to more manageable numbers and beat them more often.

I don't think he will have the numbers he had last year but I doubt he has quite the fall off that Cam had. Part of it for Cam was the talent around him was not up to par after that 2015 season and I would say some injuries also zapped a little of what he brought to the table.

For the Chiefs it is looking like they will keep all of their weapons from last year. The weapons alone are some of the best in the NFL beyond just Mahomes' ability to make things happen. Now yes I don't think he will have quite as many of the "how did he do that?" type plays but there is still plenty of the other plays from the pocket that he showed he should stay in that top-10 QB discussion for quite a while.

Look what happened to our O after Seattle figured out how to snuff it out.

Teams get a tinplate and then things change. Yes, I get he will still be good.

He is going to face a different kind of beast this year two times a year and IMO pain. lots of pain.
