Might be interesting to compare the career numbers of players without giving away who the players are, to show how underrated/overrated or close they might be.

Pitcher A - .526 win %, 5386 innings, 3.19 ERA (112 ERA+), 1.25 WHIP, 2.04 K/BB, 222 CG, 61 shutouts
Pitcher B - .534 win %, 4970 innings, 3.31 ERA (118 ERA+), 1.20 WHIP, 2.80 K/BB, 242 CG, 60 shutouts

Who do you take based on the numbers?

From the numbers given i would take player A.

BUT, of course I would want to know more.

The 2 stats extra I want most are war7 and QS%.

I'd rather have Nolan Ryan than Bert Blylevin.

It's very close to the point where I don't think you can really go wrong with either...but Ryan is considered (and was) a first ballot, easy HOF choice and by many a top 10-20 pitcher of all time, whereas Blyleven took 14 years to make the HOF and there's still quite a few people who feel that he doesn't belong in the HOF.

I think it shows how underrated Blyleven was throughout his career.

Ryan had the milestone numbers that guaranteed him a first ballot spot. All time leader in strikeouts and 300 wins, even if the way of thinking is outdated, those alone would get anyone in on the first ballot. Honestly, both pitched before my time, so I never got to see either play. I won't argue that ranking Ryan anywhere near the top 15 pitchers of all time is pretty ridiculous.

For me it's just a personal choice.

Or does it show how OVER-RATED Ryan was?

And who claims Ryan is a top 10 pitcher?

ERA+ solves for this

To a certain extent but I still like to know. I also take home ball parks into the equation and some other aspects. The new metrics are good but they don't cover everything.

I will always disagree that win% is useless. But it sure isn't one of the more important pitching stat when measuring how good a pitcher was.

I do think pitching with the lead is different than pitching when you are losing. I don't know how different. Nor do I have examples. But I do find that some players are just winners while some are not.

Both were tremendous pitchers, Loved watching them both pitch.
Born in 61, so never saw guys like Gibson, Drysdale, Kofaux, pitch.
Bert had an awesome 12-6 curve and Ryan threw smoke.
