None of them can be sent to the minors without clearing waivers. My understanding is that the rules still apply for players traded. By the way, I only count 4 guys on their roster, two they drafted and two more they traded for. Not sure how the number got to 5.

Talk about a reversal from the 2014-2015 offseason. Last year the Padres will making trades for big names and signing big names. Now, they are trading off big names and loading with other teams' excess.

Also, I found it interesting that one of the guys they drafted is named Luis Perdomo. Back in 2008, the Giants drafted another Luis Perdomo from the Cardinals and then the Padres picked him up when he went through waivers. He made 35 appearances with the Padres in 2009 and 1 appearance in 2010.

I think it depends on how they were traded. If say the Mets selected someone from the Twins, and the Padres made a trade with the Mets to acquire that player, then yes the Padres still have to keep that player on the roster all season. If the Padres selected a player from the Twins, but then completed a trade for that player from the Twins, then they are allowed to send that player to the minors on a whim. Without looking at exactly what the Padres did, I think maybe Cal was referring to the latter type trade.

Yeah, the Padres are trying to restock that farm system that was obliterated last offseason, but taking it to whole new levels.

I feel like that's a recipe for disaster. Fine by the Padres for trying that, you're basically begging for things to fail. I mean, I guess 2 of them are their's now, so they can send them to the minors. Even 3 is unheard of though.
Nope, all are Rule V players. They traded with the drafting team, not the original team.

I heard on local radio that they took 5 guys (and they named the 5 guys). I looked it up yesterday and saw the 5 guys as well. I dont remember where I saw that, though.

Looking at the list on Baseball America, they only show two trades (Luis Perdomo from Rockies and Jabari Blash from A's) and one pick in the 1st round and one pick in the 2nd round. They passed on the 3rd round. Teams are allowed one pick per round. I would have guessed your source was counting a triple A phase pick but the Padres passed on both the triple A and double A phases in the 1st round. 2015 Rule 5 Draft - BaseballAmerica.com

For the major league portion of the draft, yes, the player has to first pass through waivers to be sent to the minors. Any team that claims him (or who trades for him) has to respect the original constraints (must stay on their active roster, or major league DL, the entire year). If nobody claims him, then the player has to be offered back to the team they drafted him from. If the team takes him back, they have to return half of the $50K they originally got. The original team and the drafting team can also make a deal (trade) if he made it through waivers.
