College football 2016: Big 12 Conference preview
Having tasted the College Football Playoff, the Big 12 Conference has no plans on reliving the tumult, turmoil and handwringing that stemmed from its absence from the initial four-team field.
Fingers crossed. The positives: Oklahoma is a national frontrunner, TCU is flying far under the radar, Texas is highly confident, Oklahoma State can’t be discounted and Baylor remains a presence in the race despite its own tumultuous offseason.
Yet it’s not a completely rosy picture. Much like the Pac-12 Conference, the Big 12 is in position to be a victim of its own depth. Put another way, the league has less room for error than the Southeastern Conference or Big Ten Conference, each of which touts multiple Playoff contenders; likewise, if to a lesser extent, in the Atlantic Coast Conference, which has Florida State and Clemson to carry its flag.
So there’s the question: What happens if Oklahoma falters? Is TCU ready to take advantage? If not, the Big 12 could have as many as four teams sitting at nine or more wins yet not one truly deserving of the Playoff.
