All the talk about the idiots in the Texas legislature suing anyone is an academic exercise. First of all, UT, aTM and Texas Tech need to call the legislature's bluff. Dare them to cut funding to the three largest pubic universities & we'll see who has greater support in Texas. Three schools with 140,000 combined enrollment or a private Baptist school in Waco with less than 10,000. Yea, no kidding. Let's see who wins that contest.

Secondly, the true fulcrum in this entire debate is David Boren, President at OU. I've known David Boren for over 40 years and although I've had my differences with the man he is undoubtedly a 100% class individual and cagey as a shit house rat. David's totally committed to the future of the University of Oklahoma and he can get along with anyone when it's in OU's best interests. That is proved every day when he works closely with the University of Texas in promoting their joint interests. But someone made a huge mistake a couple of days ago......Beebe had a conference call with the Presidents of the Big 12 schools and he excluded OU, Texas and aTm. That was stupid. But even more stupid was his attempt to get the Presidents on that call to pressure UT into staying which in his warped thinking will kill the Pac 12 extending an invitation to OU. In other words, he directly went after David Boren by trying to use the rest of the conference schools as tools. Beebe is a clown if he thinks that will work. If you don't believe anything else believe this: David Boren is sick of the political infighting and wants in the Pac 12 so OU's academics can improve. He wants to rub shoulders with the Presidents of USC, UCLA, Cal, Washington and Stanford. He's never made a secret of his preference for Oklahoma to join the Pac 12 because (believe it or not) he puts academics as OU's Priority #1 and football is down there quite a ways at Priority #2. OU is going to pull the trigger and the Big 12 will implode. The BS coming out of the Texas legislature will never come to pass because Oklahoma's leaving will kill the conference. Hopefully Texas will accept an equal partnership in a new conference in lieu of being the Big Dog in a conference like it has been for 80 years. But if Texas does opt for independence, David Boren will also make sure the RRSO survives because it's in Oklahoma's best interests........not UT's best interests, not any other school's best interests and least of all Beebe's best interests because Beebe has made Boren a political enemy.

Since Texas fans seem to think Baylor being snubbed is at the heart of all the legal threats. Why not just invite them to the SEC as well? There, problem solved. A&M isn't railroaded for wanting to do it's own thing, and Baylor isn't reduced to having to join some shit conference.

Another team would be needed anyway, might as well get another piece of the Texas pie. Baylor is no worse an option than Mizz., or many of the other second tier schools that were thrown around as possible candidates. Would I prefer a top flight institution like Clemson or Va Tech? Yes, but I don't see either of them ditching the ACC.

Idiots. Look up Mike Slive's bio. You really think he's scared of getting sued. He already made sure he did his due diligence by stating the SEC was not expanding or giving out invites when this ruckus started. And the TX legislature can't do shit when it looks like 3 out 4 TX teams will land in a major conference. Look at how many people elected an Aggie governor alone! I hope OU and OSU go to the PAC, A&M to the SEC, and Mizz to SEC or up there with Neb. And the horns are left to stew in the pit of feces they created for the next decade.

No one said he was scared of getting sued. We said he probably doesn't want to deal with the HASSLE of a lawsuit. If Aggie can't leave without lawyers getting involved, what's the point? Is Aggie REALLY worth this much trouble to the SEC? That's the question.

Personally, I say no, they aren't. But that's one man's opinion.

I didn't read the whole thing so someone may of pointed this out already (I read two pages and it got seriously dry) but it is not the texas legislature that would sue. The article which first of all sites no sources states two Big 12 sources stated their would be a suit.
But even if they do, they're argument is that A&M breaking their contract is the reason the conference died. Sorry but first, this was in place long before they made their decision and second, their is a penalty in the contract already for breaking the contract. They pay the penalty and go their way. that is the contract

I don't think you understand what the proposed lawsuit is about. They aren't suing A&M. They'd be suing the SEC for tortious interference.

I think we're all agreed the suit would have no merit, but it would still cost money to litigate for the SEC. They may decide it isn't worth the hassle and tell A&M to figure it out and call them later.

I understand completely.
My first sentence was to say the B12 is the one that will be suing not the legislature. The contract is not with the legislature it is with the B12.

My second part was to say that they would have to prove damages. Yes the tortuous interference is the SEC convincing A&M that they should breach contract but the damages (which is the point of all lawsuits) is that this broken contract resulted in the conference folding.

Well there is a penalty in the contract to provide for this already. They pay the penalty and move on. There are no damages. What are they suing for?

As for the SEC if they want A&M, which remains to be seen they will not be scared off by a frivolous lawsuit. They will just counter sue for damages only at this point there will be damages awarded for defamation and legal costs.

Maybe I'm a homer......I just can't see the SEC wanting Aggie bad enough to go through with any of that crap. That's a whole lot of work to get a mid-tier Big 12 school at best that won't really compete in the SEC. I'm not seeing a high enough upside for the SEC to go through this stuff.

A&M is a major school with tradition and opens up the Texas market (tv and recruiting) to the whole SEC.

Not really. The SEC already gets better ratings in Texas than A&M. Major school? Tradition? Where?

A&M is a school sitting on a huge endowment, large alumni base, and great facilities......and instead of leveraging that to be more marketable and better, they sit on it and squander every advantage they have.

This is why they are little brother......and why they always will be as long as this doesn't change. The SEC won't get much by adding Aggie.....but a whining cry baby school - but it's better they're the SECs headache instead of ours, good luck

There is no maybe about it, you are. And you really haven't contributed anything to the discussion other than your desire for A&M to rot.

A&M would be a solid get for the SEC, for all the reasons that were mentioned above. They want the Texas market, bad. And the SEC wont shy away from a few butt hurt Baylor alums thumping their chest to get it.

Here's what you don't get - your homerism is too much for you to grasp anything I've posted here. I have yet to hate on Aggie.....I've given valid points backed with solid reasoning, so get your panties out your rear.

The SEC won't "get" the Texas market just because they get Aggie. If Texas and Tech go to the Pac 12, the SEC will pretty much get NIL. Texas is tops in the state, Tech is nearly even in terms of ratings. Those two combined will take the lions share of the market with them.

If the Big 12 stays together and Aggie goes to the SEC, THEN you have a point. The worst thing that can happen for the SEC is for Texas and OU to go to the PAC 12.

Can I point out the obvious that you seem to be missing here? THERE'S A BUYOUT!! A&M isn't the B-12's slave, they have the right to move just as Nebraska and Colorado did. They have to pay the buyout, but the idea that they are responsible for the conference is just plain stupid! A&M does NOT have the responsibility to keep any conference together, they just have to pay the exit fees and be gone. What a joke, "you promised you would never leave us".. Well, that was before I realized that I couldn't stand another minute with you.

Like I said before, you just really want A&M to flounder while Texas moves on to bigger and better things. So you can then hop on a message board and LOL @ A&M, all while thumping your chest and spouting off about UT superiority.

Slive is a Cornell educated lawyer. Pretty sure he has a better understanding of legal risk than you do.

NOT ONCE have I advocated that I AGREE with the legal action or that I believe it's warranted. MAN your reading comprehension sucks.

I've simply stated what is being REPORTED that the legislature wants to do, and the POSSIBLE repurcussions of such actions.

I don't care if you whiny bitches leave or not. But I WILL laugh my ass off if the legislature sabotages your chances of getting in the SEC. Oh the tears and crying we'll all hear then......it would be EPIC.

You're missing Star's point. Everyone agrees with you that the Aggies should be able to write a (big?) check and yell adios while they pack the U-Haul and head east. But the problem is that there are a bunch of idiots in the Texas legislature and it only takes one of them to file a suit.....even if that suit is eventually thrown so far out the courthouse window it bounces. By the time that happened the damage would have already been done. And your point that the SEC is run by a Cornell educated lawyer is well taken because it means he knows that too. The question is would he want to hassle with that....not that it would be the eventual deal killer.....since it would put things in limbo. But this is all academic. OU is going to make the move and that will kill the conference when the Sooners and the Cowboys go to the Pac 12. At that point UT needs to make a big, big decision. Go indy or go west? I'd bet they would go west. Then aTm, UT and Tech would all present a united front against any Baylor kamikazes.

I don't understand where the legislature comes into this. My understanding is it is the B12 that will sue. Does the Texas legislature have something to do with the B12? I knew Beebe had crawled up UT's ass but I did not realize how far I guess.

As for the tv market. A&M would bring a major increase in tv market. Texas may be a bigger school but that doesn't mean they have to compete head to head to have a share of the market. IF A&M and Alabama is on do you think Texas tv's would be tuned to it? If A&M and any SEC school was on Texas tv's would be tuned to it if not competing against Texas vs. a major school.

It will also open up the market for recruits in the SEC because a Texas (the state not the school) recruit will be able to go to an SEC school and be seen on TV in Texas.
The same if Texas goes PAC. It opens the PAC up in Texas.

I hadn't thought about it before but this expansion stuff could really change the scenery when it comes to Texas recruiting. Texas will likely still be big dog but there will be a lot more competition in that state.

Bro, I went to UF. I could give two shits about what happens to A&M. I just think they would be a good pick up for the SEC, and that any law suit would be frivolous

Besides, once a buyout is agreed to with A&M and the existing Big12 members, then paid, the contract has been voided as of the date of the payment. Its a negotiated settlement. There would also have to be a joint "hold harmless" clause signed by all parties before the payment is tendered, because no way A&M shells out the kind of money they will need to in the buyout without one.

What you are suggesting is that they fork over a fortune, and then pretty much say 'K, now ya'll can sue us now that we're legally gone'

Never trust Texas. They've always got two fingers crossed behind their back.

The PAC is well aware of this, having already been 'used' by UT to threaten the remaining BIG XII members into compliance.

"Texas don't leave to the PAC, we'll give you anything you want!!!"

I really can't see PAC taking Texas with the LHN. But with stories that Texas invited TTech in to make it a partnership might mean they are hoping for the PAC acceptance if their network is a regional.

They will lose a lot of power in the PAC though. The original members will not divide like the Big 8 did.
