Mathieu Schneider was #27 most places that mattered.

Who is this Tom Preissing you say? I don't know or never heard of a Tom Preissing.

(I would have given it Backes - But look for Arty to have some good years in Chicago)

Oh, and Marty Biron... Don't get too comfortable there. You are only there because I have knee problems. And you won't be there after this guy is done:

But this guy is the best of them all, didn't you know?!

While all of the 91s you're thinking of are very good players I think it's going to take more than 5 years for any of them them to eclipse Fedorov. Stamkos is the closest and he's still almost 700 points behind him.

Okay maybe 10 years......

I only said 5 years because I predict JT to have 150 pts per season moving forward.

If Schneider doesn't count as a 72 I don't see how Hartnell should count as a 43.

This is what I'm thinking

A lot of players want the lower numbers because they feel validated and it's a more normal number(which I don't blame them) but at the same time, if you're a great player and you take a higher number, then more people might remember you for the number alone

players take lower numbers because when you walk into a room in minor hockey, there are jerseys numbered 2-17 hanging on the wall (plus 30 for the fat guy), and you pick one. If you need to alter a number because there are two number 6's for whatever reason, you add a single strip of white tape behind the number.

When you're really little, yeah. But nowadays if you go to a AA or AAA game you'll see all kinds of different numbers, all the way from novice on up.

maybe my hockey association was broke. :noidea:
anyone who brought their own jersey to the shop to change the number would get ridiculed into oblivion.
players on other teams with higher numbers (especially 69) would have a rough time of it as well.

How old are you? What you're talking about (1 through 17 and 30 for the 2nd goalie) was more common years ago I think, in the days before kids in diapers had 800 dollar skates. Also more common at younger ages and lower levels.

old enough where a hockey stick was made of wood and cost $20 at Canadian Tire.
in my teen years, some players would show up wearing 69 or 1/2 or 88, but those kids got beat on.

Backes should be there at 42 ahead of Robert Esche.

We didn't have beatdowns so much, but we had the same numbering scheme. My first few years the goalie got #1 and then the jerseys went in size order, with the smalls being the lowest numbers, then the mediums, etc.

It wasn't until I was a few years on that they gave us a choice of numbers.

Not just the fat kid. The one who skated the worst.

It wasn't quite like that for me. My organization didn't issue #1 (for whatever reason). 2 - 8 were for Defensemen. 8-19 were for forwards. 20 - 29 were for anyone except goalies. Goalies had 30 - 34. I remember being mad because I wanted to wear 29 or 24 and play goal and I wasn't allowed. 29 was my grandfather's number for the Orioles and 24 was what Rick Dempsey wore, every other sport I wore one of those two. I eventually chose 34.

Then I made a select team as a backup and the starter also wore 34, I reversed it to my now infamous number. Because they allowed pretty much any number but 24 and 29 were also taken.

It's funny here. Every team over squirt age has a 61. It's the most contested number, usually have four or five kids request it on every team. Every younger team the number is 72 (goalie or not). A lot of kids want to wear 19, 71 and 7 also.

I imagine everyone in DC wants to wear 8. When my cousins played there, the numbers were 32, 37 and 12 (Hunter, Kolzig and Bondra). It is neat to see how the "popular" numbers change.

When I was in 9th grade I was just randomly assigned a jersey for my high school team. When the guys on my MTHL team saw it in my bag they basically all said "81? Are you playing right wing or wide receiver?" (probably with more swearing and insults). I was just way ahead of the curve I guess.
