Slide feet first you bring your feet in and shorten yourself and you are high up and makes it easy to tag. If I could tell it was going to be close I always went head first. And was never thrown out. My Junior and Senior year in HS was 33-33 stealing.
Sounds like the Rangers need you....designated base runner...

I haven't watched much tonight but both calls I have seen go to replay, it is pretty clear to me they made the wrong calls on both. Gonzalez HBP clearly never hit him and that call on Odor there absolutely couldn't be called clear enough to overturn. WTF is the point if they are consistently inconsistent or getting the calls wrong even with replay.

.......I'm zero for life in sliding head-first.

I'm all in favor of sliding with the feet first, and stretching. Don't at all understand why guys slide and the first foot to hit the bag is the foot they're dragging. I never did this, b/c this wasn't what I was taught or practiced.

Head first, in the long - my opinion only - opens up for so many more injuries. Don't believe me? Ask the immortal Josh Hamilton. He's been hurt twice I know of - maybe 3 times actually - with all that head-first stuff.

Agree on the first, and not so much on the second.

Never saw the ball get close on the HBP but definitely thought Odor was out.

Don't dive head first into 1st. Ha! There were times I would slide feet first and then stand right up when I hit the bag.

My point is by the time you actually see him clearly touch his shoulder on the tag you cannot from the angle they kept showing see if his foot is not touching the bag already

Didn't the A's do that 30 years ago??? Some track star, He lasted only a few games...cannot remember the name..

I think Finley did do that now that you mention it. First time I saw this at a HS game I thought this courtesy runner thing is such nonsense.

Finley did everything else - other than the midget pinch hitter that Bill Veek pulled - so why not this?

From WIkipedia! Herb Washington -

In 1974, Washington was tapped by Oakland A's owner Charlie Finley to become the team's "designated runner". Despite having no professional baseball experience, and having last played baseball in high school, Washington was a member of the Athletics 1974 World Series championship team. His MLB debut was on April 4, 1974, against the Texas Rangers.

Appearing as a pinch-runner for Joe Rudi in game two of the 1974 World Series, Washington was picked off first base in a crucial ninth-inning situation by Dodgers reliever Mike Marshall.[1]

Washington played in 105 Major League games without batting, pitching, or fielding, playing exclusively as a pinch runner.[3] He had 31 stolen bases in 48 attempts and scored 33 runs during his short career.[1] He was released one month into the 1975 season.[2][3] Washington is one of only seven players to have more game appearances than plate appearances.[4]

Washington's 1975 Topps baseball card is the only baseball card ever released that uses the "pinch runner" position label.[5][6]
