1987 NY Met Darryl Strawberry charges Red Sox pitcher Al Nipper during spring training exhibition game, causes bench clearing brawl
  • 1992 NY Met Daryl Boston, Vince Coleman & Dwight Gooden accused of r*pe
  • 1954 Braves Henry Aaron homers in his 1st exhibition game
I found a game report on Aaron's first game and while it was mentioned he had homered, it was really far down in the story.

I was trying to get a headline on when the Browns moved to Baltimore. I know the dates that the move was approved and while it wasn't a big national story, the Baltimore paper apparently either didn't give a crap or wasn't interested or inclined to ask. Several days either side of it and -- nothing.

The Sun has always been a pretty good paper but in this case, they didn't have anybody who remotely undertook to care. It's not like somebody in the Orioles ownership wasn't bragging about it at dinner parties.

It's possible Connie Mack was a genius and it's likely he was guessing at it part of the time. The 1945 Browns were NOT the favorites to win the pennant despite this assertion.

Here's another ditty I found in my search for Pete Gray in 1945. The Post-Dispatch had this bit about spring training. Apparently they had just invented a pitching machine and not everyone was fond of it at first. It explained how it worked.

A rather bizarre cartoon on Page 1 of the Boston Globe, Sept. 30, 1914 after the Braves completed their miracle run to the NL pennant.
