I'm not talking about the actors specifically, I'm talking about the whole movies. The book The Shining is far superior to the movie, which completely swerves from the themes of the book. If I hadn't read the book, I may have enjoyed the movie more

I've read the book too. I actually think King was a bit of whiny bitch about the changes Kubrick made. I don't think they were that severe at all, and in most instances, I actually think the changes made it better, particularly from a cinematic standpoint.

King did a TV mini-series version of his book, and it sucked major bawls. If it were up to King, Jack wouldn't have even been in the film, nor would have Shelly Duvall.

Also the season change was another winner IMO. Makes it much more sinister and empty.

If it were up to King, there would've been no Grady twins, and whoever replaced Jack would've been swinging a fucking mallet!?

I'd say Kubrick made the right call on many of the changes.


This is a rare instance, where I like the movie better. Particularly after watching King's mini-series, which as mentioned, was terrible.

Also, Jack's performance in that, is one of the most iconic performances in cinema history.


I don't care if Stephen King is your personal hero, and you have an entire room in your house set up as a shrine to him, a 2.5 on the Shining is ridiculous.

Much more so than whatever rating on Seven you were complaining about.

I identify with the Goodfella change the most. The Godfather Part II was certainly an improvement over the first, but still contained its fair share of boring parts. De Niro was good though. Casino is unrivaled trash, IMO. I hated De Niro in that movie, in fact, it was one of the first movies that made me take a genuine disliking towards De Niro. Watching his older stuff, particularly The King of Comedy, one of nine movies I've ever given a perfect score, has changed my mind, but I remain convinced his acting aged horribly.

I'm surprised we agree on French Connection. Outside of the car chase scene, that movie was largely forgettable.

I don't know if you ever saw DeNiro in The Deer Hunter, one of the greats of all time. Did you ever see One Flew Over the Cockoo's Nest, Nicholson was great in that movie, and it was also one of the great movies.
