No More "Bullpen Failure" - maybe
Here is Scott Lucas' report on Allard's outing last night.
Kolby Allard showed up to Nashville ready and hyped and amped. Dealing an unexpectedly lively 93-94 MPH fastball, Allard struck out seven of his first eleven opponents and eight overall. Aside from the fastball, Allard emphasized the curve early. In the 3rd, he offered more changes, and they aided his escape from a bases-loaded jam. A softly lined single and a grounded double just inside the line put runners at second and third with none out. Allard then struck out lefty Dom Nunez on a change that arrived firm as a two-seamer, but the speed difference (86) and location (arm-side, strange for a change) fooled the hitter. Next, Allard fanned righty Elliot Soto on a traditional change that died as it reached the plate. After a walk, Allard's two-strike fastball froze Pat Valaika.
In the last two innings, two runners were caught stealing, one on a pickoff. Allard needed the help, as his pitch count reached 101. Toward the end, Allard's fastball sat 91-92 and touched 93. On the whole, an encouraging outing.
