I'm kind of surprised... although has there been any "top team" with a "big name goalie" since the lockout that's LESS scary than New Jersey? "System teams" aren't going to go very far in the postseason if they lack true scoring talent. I don't care how good Brodeur is for you, if you get no goal support and your defense can't stop three different lines, you're not getting out of the first round.

yea i do not think the trap works in the playoffs. it is fine in the regular season although when teams step it up in the playoffs you better expect more forechecking.

i'm not surprised that they did it, but i am surprised they were the only ones that did...even though they had lost carter and gagne i still thought they'd win game 5. marty has been off lately, the flyers gave them fits in the regular season, bouch was playing well...that and leino is a good fill in guy. the pens losing game 5 was frustrating, but it's hard to beat a goalie playing on acid. the caps losing game five, similar thing, halak playing ridiculous hockey. i think both those end at 6 though.

On paper Devils are not worse than Flyers. They had much better regular season and they didn't have "goalie situation". Seriously, who could have expected Boucher will soundly outplay Brodeur? Not me. Not based on regular season.
NJ probably decided that regular season was enough, who needs play-off. Either that, or they were not ready for the level of intensity Flyers brought.
Whoever plays Flyers next (hopefully Capitals) is up for a rough ride.

Personally I don't think the trap is a good, effective tactic any longer. It really hasn't been since the NHL cut down on the clutching, grabbing and interference.

Part of the Trap is that you have to interfere...get in the way of the forwards dumping the puck in so their defense...or goalie...can get to the puck and get it out of the zone. These days...if you do that, you're going to get penalized.

Not to mention, if the Devils WERE indeed trapping in the series...I didn't notice. Probably why the Flyers were able to get into the zone and pin them in a lot.
