let's see. there would be some years smith would get into the pro bowl with his numbers. crabtree wouldn't even be in the discussion. u can knock smith all u want, but outside of the eagles game we haven't needed to utilize the passing game much. when we needed smith to make plays, he's made them.

however, the most important job smith has is handing the ball off to gore. and he's been pro at that like a jenna jamison blowjob. crabtree can't touch that

Yeah, they're called the 1970s. Look, Smith's improvement in terms of reducing mistakes has been impressive, and he has made the plays late in games when we've needed him to thus far. But don't fool yourself. Smith wouldn't be close to the pro bowl discussion any time in the last two decades based on his numbers.

And Gore has had success on longer runs in large part because of Crabtree's blocking downfield, which has improved dramatically.

smith usually plays his best in 4th quarter comebacks. typically when he's sitting there in shotgun with the spread offense. i wouldn't want to see it all game, but i cringe when the ball is going to crabtree

And I still cringe when Smith drops back to pass with the game on the line.

How many times, previous to this year, did Alex Smith lead the Niners back? How many times did he have a costly turnover late in a game he was attempting to lead a comeback in?

If Smith's most important job is handing the ball of to Gore, then isn't Crabtree's most important job blocking downfield for Gore, which he has been pretty beastly at?

And Smith would have made the probowl with these numbers in some years? What years are those? He's on pace to throw for 2900 yards this year.

Lol, does this even deserve a response? Smith is not making any pro-bowls when he's 31st in the league in passing attempts and is barely passing for 200 yards per game.

Like I said earlier, it's pretty obvious what you're doing i. Pimping Alex Smith by downgrading Michael Crabtree. It's widely known that I'm not a fan of either, but I don't see how you can say that Smith has been that much better than Crabs.

Not to get into your argument re: Crabtree or Crabtree/Smith, but the way I feel in the games, when the ball is going to Crabtree I worry about an INT, when the ball is going to Davis I worry about an INC. When Gore doesn't hit the hole quickly, I worry about a fumble. When Smith goes back for an extended time, I worry about a sack-fumble, though this year he's more or less held on. However, I haven't, in general, worried about an INT with Smith, where he's been 42/24 in TD/INT ratio for the last 30 games (3 seasons). The game-on-the-line INTs are mostly hit while thrown passes, which is why I worry about the hit/sack most (as opposed to bad target decisions) (Alex, of course, shares blame, here).

I also worry more about the strip-sack than an INT, but I get nervous either way.

Smith has been good at knowing his role and doing what is asked of him. He is not now nor will he ever be an elite QB. But he has been instrumental in a few comebacks and unlike last years is not making the mistakes that lead to lossess. Crabtree is playing better since the Niners have been winning. Crabs seems to have the Randy Moss attitude half assing it when the team is bad trying when the team is good.

go back and look it up. not hard.

Can't even defend your own statement? Is it that you figured out that as soon as you name a year 12 other posters here will point out how stupid it is?

Here:

All rankings are strictly NFC.
He's 5th in passer rating
He's 13th in yards
He's 10th in YPA
He's 3rd in comp %
He's 10th in TDs
He's 1st in interceptions

So he's top 3 in the conference in two stats. Neither of which greatly influence Pro Bowl selection. The numbers that do effect Pro Bowl voters, however, see him rank 5th, 10th, 10th and 13th.

Which years would those get you in the Pro Bowl? Is it a year where 8 guys that get chosen ahead of him opt not to go?

I looked I couldn't find one. I only looked until 2000, though. Care to point out to us which year Smith makes the probowl? Try to make it post the 1970s era.

Actually, I don't know why I'm bothering with you. Your head is too far up Smith's ass.

Under what scenario do you see Smith in the Pro Bowl? Rodgers, Brees and Stafford pretty much have it locked up. Then after that Manning is having a really good year, Romo and Vick get name recognition votes.

eli manning, jeff garcia...

Garcia's pro bowl years saw him throw for

2000 he threw for 4278 yards (most in 49er history), 31 TDs and 10 INTs

In 2001 Garcia threw for 3538 yards, 32 TDs and 12 INTs

In 2002 Garcia threw for 3344/21/10

Smith was better than which of those?

In 2007 he was an injury replacement.

I don't even know if I'd put Smith over Newton, either.

Yeah, I was going to add Newton and Cutler to the list above Smith too, because the league wide perception is that Smith is just making sure Gore can win the games... and there is a lot of truth to that perception.

Who knows though, maybe the votes by Smith's mom and wife will be enough to get him in the Pro Bowl
