Once this season he pulled up before the first down marker. The next week, he was pointedly fighting to get past the marker as if his coach had spoken to him about it and he was trying to correct the mistake.

How exactly does Davis getting in his face last year bear on his work ethic this year? Or should we judge our entire team on what happened last year?

Btw, way to address the points I made rather than changing the subject.

well if u wanna get back to the packers, they're doing a better job catching the ball given the balls thrown to them.

fact of the matter is, crabtree needs to start performing like a 1st round wr. afteral he didn't play for the gators...

Congratulations on once again completely ignoring the points I raised.

i just don't see them as being relevant to performance right now. green bay's recieving core is impressive. not perfect, but they've been getting a lot more out of their wr's than we have.

Their QB has been alright, too. But I doubt that has any impact on their WRs.

Re: my comments, seriously? You cited an argument from training camp last year to criticize Crabtree's current work ethic, but my example of Crabtree fighting for the first down the past two weeks is not relevant to his performance right now? Ok.

poor route running and catching shows the poor work effort. not showing up to camp for 3 years shows poor work effort.

maybe he cowboys the fuck up now that he realizes he can't dog it in the nfl. he needs to impress over the 2nd half and be a guy that can go over the middle and nail those first downs.

How many other players on the Niners, and in the NFL, do you hold the past against? Is Carlos Rogers a decent CB who can't catch?

How about Alex Smith?

Ray MacDonald entered the league with plenty of baggage.

Now you're just repeating yourself and ignoring the counterpoints I raised. It's ok, I'll just repeat them myself:

Crabtree is getting open. If it's not his route-running, how do you explain that? His pure physical talent?

Crabtree has not dropped a ball since the TB game, and has made several impressive catches since then.

Cratbree only missed camp his rookie year. He was at camp, and even practiced, in 2010. He missed the preseason games. This year, all signs indicate that he was legitimately injured. Not sure what you want him to do in that case.

So other than just repeating yourself once again, how do you address those things?

preseason is part of camp...

he obviously needs the practice, as he's shown since he's been on the field.

Good point. Shoot, Alex Smith took nearly two years off. The slacker. He clearly he needed the work, but wasn't willing to put in the time. And what's up with Ray not playing these days?

well at least smith is doing his job...

How is Smith doing his job, but Crabtree not? I'd venture to say that Crabtree is just as good as a WR as Smith is a QB, maybe even better.

Yet you don't have a problem defending Smith up and down.

I'd give the nod to Crabtree, but it's tough to say at this point. Smith has certainly been less mistake-prone this year. And if we're just ranking players at the positions, Smith would rank higher because of relative lack of good QBs in the league.

However, if we compare Crabtree vs. the 80-odd starting receivers in the league (calling it 2.5 "starting" WRs per team as so many these days run three-wide as a base), it's an interesting discussion. We've barely seen Crabtree play without Smith at QB. In the six games he played with Troy Smith, Crabtree put up 317 yards and four TDs. That comprised nearly a third of our passing yards in those games and 80% of our passing TDs over that span. Over a 16-game schedule, it comes out to 850 yards and 11 TDs, pretty decent numbers in a passing offense that was producing less than 200 yards a game. And Troy Smith ain't exactly elite. At the end of the day, I think Crabtree's upside is greater.

Crabtree might also be more well-rounded. At this point, he's a pretty solid all-around WR, and has become a pretty darn good blocker.

That's fine with me. I think there's very little doubt but that he hasn't lived up to expectations. But he also hasn't been as bad as you and MW would have people believe, and citing outdated evidence doesn't help your cause (though at least, unlike MW, you're bothering to do that much).

well i believe he hasn't lived up to expectations because he has failed to put in the required work. at some point we're gonna need to win a game or two through the air. if edwards doesn't get healthy and davis has to babysit the offensive line, crabtree needs to step up. right now i'm scared to even think of that situation. i just see a ball popping up in the air.

If we have to win a game or two through the air, don't we also have to depend on Alex Smith? How do you feel putting the game in his hands?

And I know, blah blah blah Philadelphia, blah blah blah Detroit.

To respond before anyone brings the two games above up, who led the Niners in receiving in those two games?

let's see. there would be some years smith would get into the pro bowl with his numbers. crabtree wouldn't even be in the discussion. u can knock smith all u want, but outside of the eagles game we haven't needed to utilize the passing game much. when we needed smith to make plays, he's made them.

however, the most important job smith has is handing the ball off to gore. and he's been pro at that like a jenna jamison blowjob. crabtree can't touch that

smith usually plays his best in 4th quarter comebacks. typically when he's sitting there in shotgun with the spread offense. i wouldn't want to see it all game, but i cringe when the ball is going to crabtree
