Good to see the bullpen get some help. And not at the price of anyone who will contribute this year or anytime soon. (Vasquez got Talked up a lot during WhiteCaps broadcasts though)Sounds like outside of his blown save against us, Veras has been solid this year. I don't understand how people still look at Rick as a trade chip, but that's just me.

I don't see how they could actually better the team by moving him. I'd trade him for Hamels, if the Phils want to dump money that badly.(and if Detroit wants to take on that kind of payroll) But putting Smyly into the rotation would seriously hamstring the pen. Coke is awful, and needs to keep his current role of Only When It Doesn't Matter. (Same for New Mexico) and I'm not banking on Downs.

The Detroit Tigers acquired reliever Jose Veras from the Houston Astros today for minor league outfielder Danry Vazquez and a player to be named later.

Detroit will need to make a spot for him on the active roster (a relief pitcher will most certainly be sent down to AAA). They had an open spot on their 40-man roster (due to the long-term injury to Octavio Dotel), so they do not need to shuffle their 40-man roster.

Veras was the closer for the Astros and was having a good season. He saved 19 games and had a 2.93 ERA.

Not a bad trade Tigers had to give up someone and with the outfield crowded for the foreseeable future Vasquez was expendable. I am just wondering who that player to be named later is.

I would still like to see Detroit find a SS. I could see MLB zinging Jhonny a month before the playoffs and Detroit will be left with Santiago or Worth. Is Worth even back playing?

The thing about Smyly as a starter he would be back in the pen for playoffs with the shortened rotation. But thats just my take I still would like to see a lefty in the rotation.

Remember....Peralta can "lawyer up" and put off any suspension. Although that will cut into his future free agency contract.

I actually hate his guts. But he's a lefty, could be available, and could help the club long term. I honestly would be fine watching Ricky win another 150 games or so as a Tiger.

I don't know if we even make the playoffs without Smyly in the pen JDW.

Most likely the player to be named was a prospect that was drafted last yr and must wait 1 yr before being traded. Last years draft included jake thompson (unlikely) austin schotts (unlikely but possible) drew verhagen (unlikely) deven travis (unlikely) or one of the other late round picks that are not one of the tigers top 20 prospects.. most likely this is the case... i doubt the tigers gave up their 4th over all prospect and another top 20 for veras.

Inglesias for Garcia!

It looks like Peralta's suspension will be announced before the end of the week. I bet it's a take this or else ultimatum!

It's a damn shame the Tigers have to give up a quality prospect like Garcia. I don't blame Peralta as much as a lack of the Tigers to develop any middle infield prospects.

Inglesias will anchor the position and this will settle the SS position for a number of years. Good job of DD to make something happen and get a good prospect for SS.

Yes, a necessary evil brought about by Peralta's irresponsibility. I agree, the Tiger insiders likely know his suspension is coming. Hate to lose Avisail, but we got a bonafide MLB SS that we badly need, given our lousy options in the minors.

This is a great trade.....I was the biggest Jhonny supporter here but he is guilty of what I consider the greatest crime in baseball and sports......good bye so long.....even if there is a appeal or some deal on the suspension I say get rid of him now......

Danny Knobler reporting that the Tigers are still trying to swing a deal with the SF Giants. Rumored to be for veteran reliever Javier Lopez.

Red Sox fan here.

The reports I'm reading saying we sent Jose Iglesias to your team in a 3 team deal is not making me at all happy.

Iglesias has Gold Glove potential I can assure you. It's his batting ability that has been questioned in the past, not his glovework.

I like the fact the Tigers got a Red Sox SS.

They have a history of trading away some decent SS.

The Red Sox will win the initial or short term part of the trade. The White Sox have the biggest boom or bust possibility and the Tigers will most likely be the long term winner with a guy that locks down a position of need and the entire MLB has very limited talent at.

I wonder if the Tigers floated Smyly or Porcello to Boston to avoid sending Garcia to Chicago!
