Does anyone know Suh's cap hit in '15 if he is released after the upcoming season?.
$13 mil, $9.7 mil dead
His big hit is this season @ $22 mil, $19 dead.
If we keep him this year we may as we'll keep him in '15

If you trade him, it's not like you still don't eat the cap number.

Thisbis the part I don't think anyone has touched on, but it's been in the back of my mind. If we keep extending these contracts, and put more and more money on the back burner, sooner or later we're gonna be in the Raiders spot. Granted, they haven't won anything recently, but what I'm saying is we're gonna have to load up on scrubs just to get by. Then we'll come to a spot where we can start over with a ton of cap space. One thing I do know is that if they kick this can much further down the road, there will have to be a complete rebuild within 3-4 years.
And a part a me will be fine with it, so long as we win a SB with the current players. That will erase everything else. I just find it very hard to believe it will happen. If the front office can come out of this mess without a "rebuilding" phase, then I'll be impressed.
The Rams would have been in the same boat had they actually hit on their picks. The Lions finally draft players worth re-signing and it happens to be when rookie contracts were at an all time high.
I don't see where/how we can afford all 3. Unless you can give Suh an astronimcal chunk of money up front, We will be seeing a complete rebuild sooner than later. Something's gotta give. My guess is that they pay him and we say "same ol Lions" for the next 5-10 years.
Same ol Lions? When is the last time they had a player as dominant as CJ? Barry? ... Suh, Porcher? ... Staff, nobody. All three of these dudes will be going into their primes at the same time. We are going to have a playoff team for a long time. Just needed some coaching, watch.

Obviously I'm hoping for greatness until a few years down the road when we're fielding 3 guys and udfa's. Maybe Suh can play O-line, CJ can play Safety and Stafford can learn to kick FG's and punt. Then at least we would have 6-7 positions wrapped up with 90% of our cap.
There is no doubt that this situation will come to a head. But I'm not ready to blow up our defense at this point.
If you build a great offense, you might be able to win a championship, if there are no dominating defenses in the league.
If you build a great defense, you can win a championship with Trent Dilfer as your QB.
. That is why I continue to say, re-sign Suh and build around him. Get some talented rookies playing on the cheap for the next 4 seasons.
We do have a lot tied up in our top three guys, but then when you drop down to how much we have in our top 5 guys there are several teams with more $$ in their top 5 then we have, so I think looking at the situation in context helps.
Yes, we're top-heavy, but not absurdly so. I think there's a lot of ins and outs in the world of the NFL that a lot of us have a hard time wrapping our heads around because there aren't apples-to-apples comparisons in real life.
Easier said than done. With 3 players taking up so much of the overall cap space, you need every draft pick to not only start, but to be very good starters. Highly improbable. If Detroit elects to keep all three, they have very little chance of being anything more than a .500 team.
One of them must go and Stafford's contract has the freshest ink which means he stays. CJ is the best receiver in the league, maybe ever. Suh is a great player but has had problems, both on the field and (apparently) in the locker room.
