Does anyone know Suh's cap hit in '15 if he is released after the upcoming season?.

$13 mil, $9.7 mil dead

His big hit is this season @ $22 mil, $19 dead.

If we keep him this year we may as we'll keep him in '15

If you trade him, it's not like you still don't eat the cap number.

You eat the cap hit for one year. If they give him 16 million a year, you have to remember, his cap hit won't be 16 million a year, it will be 16 million plus the money rolled over which I believe Dr. Evil Said was roughly 10 million. So his cap hit will be 18 million over the next 5 years, or 7 million dollars more than the next highest paid DT.

Here is the kick in junk -- If I read his contract right, 2015 is a player option, so Suh can void the last year of the contract and enter FA. I believe that is the main reason they want to try and get him signed to an extension now.

It could turn out that when all three are done playing (Stafford, CJ, and Suh), we have 3 HOF players (2 likely, Staff a long shot) and all will be viewed more as a burden to their team than a benefit. At this point, I think only CJ is worth his salary.

I am completely ignorant on this type of thing. Is there a possibility that the lions could trade Suh via some type of sign and trade? I would think somebody out there would want him. I know there are a couple of issues with this, not least the PR issue. Another being the Lions would probably have to eat some of the dead cap.
One thing I do know is that if they kick this can much further down the road, there will have to be a complete rebuild within 3-4 years.

Thisbis the part I don't think anyone has touched on, but it's been in the back of my mind. If we keep extending these contracts, and put more and more money on the back burner, sooner or later we're gonna be in the Raiders spot. Granted, they haven't won anything recently, but what I'm saying is we're gonna have to load up on scrubs just to get by. Then we'll come to a spot where we can start over with a ton of cap space.

And a part a me will be fine with it, so long as we win a SB with the current players. That will erase everything else. I just find it very hard to believe it will happen. If the front office can come out of this mess without a "rebuilding" phase, then I'll be impressed.

Micro, I find it highly unlikely that a visit to the SB is in the immediate future. Hope I'm wrong.

The fact is, the Lions picked the worst time in history to be real bad. The year they had the number on pick they would have been better of passing on it altogether. They struck gold with CJ but were immediately burdened with his huge contract as well. Ditto Suh. The Lions further complicated matters by back-ending these huge rookie contracts. Fast forward 5 years and these same players would have had about 1/3 the contract. The 25% increase due to players hit with the franchise tag was another bullet seemingly target directly at the Lions. bottom line is the Matt Millen Lions were awful and were penalized for it.

The Rams would have been in the same boat had they actually hit on their picks. The Lions finally draft players worth re-signing and it happens to be when rookie contracts were at an all time high.

I don't see where/how we can afford all 3. Unless you can give Suh an astronimcal chunk of money up front, We will be seeing a complete rebuild sooner than later. Something's gotta give. My guess is that they pay him and we say "same ol Lions" for the next 5-10 years.

Funny thing is, I see trading Suh as being key to actually building a better team.

That's the thing. I agree, if this team were in solid all-around shape and ready to compete for a championship with Suh in place, then I'd feel better about signing him. But we're not there. We're several holes away from being a Super Bowl team.

Same ol Lions? When is the last time they had a player as dominant as CJ? Barry? ... Suh, Porcher? ... Staff, nobody. All three of these dudes will be going into their primes at the same time. We are going to have a playoff team for a long time. Just needed some coaching, watch.

Obviously I'm hoping for greatness until a few years down the road when we're fielding 3 guys and udfa's. Maybe Suh can play O-line, CJ can play Safety and Stafford can learn to kick FG's and punt. Then at least we would have 6-7 positions wrapped up with 90% of our cap.

There is no doubt that this situation will come to a head. But I'm not ready to blow up our defense at this point.

If you build a great offense, you might be able to win a championship, if there are no dominating defenses in the league.

If you build a great defense, you can win a championship with Trent Dilfer as your QB.

We do have a lot tied up in our top three guys, but then when you drop down to how much we have in our top 5 guys there are several teams with more $$ in their top 5 then we have, so I think looking at the situation in context helps.

Yes, we're top-heavy, but not absurdly so. I think there's a lot of ins and outs in the world of the NFL that a lot of us have a hard time wrapping our heads around because there aren't apples-to-apples comparisons in real life.

. That is why I continue to say, re-sign Suh and build around him. Get some talented rookies playing on the cheap for the next 4 seasons.

Easier said than done. With 3 players taking up so much of the overall cap space, you need every draft pick to not only start, but to be very good starters. Highly improbable. If Detroit elects to keep all three, they have very little chance of being anything more than a .500 team.
One of them must go and Stafford's contract has the freshest ink which means he stays. CJ is the best receiver in the league, maybe ever. Suh is a great player but has had problems, both on the field and (apparently) in the locker room.

They continue to ignore the fact the Waddle,Warford, Raiola, Ansah. Devin Taylor are all playing for about 5 million total next season.

We already have solid starters... Warford,Waddle, Ansah... Slay and D.Taylor both showed a lot of promise.

We have 6 picks this year. Finding 2 solid starters shouldn't be that hard. Mike Mayock just said this is the deepest draft he has seen in 10 years.

Its unfortunate the financial situation detroit is in, but the lions will not win by trading away a future HOF dt in is prime. I cant get on board with that. They need to hit their draft picks like they did last year. Yes, the seahawks won becaue they hit their draft picks and good, young picks are what makes a team rich with talent and financially stable. If the lions have a draft like last years they could be legitimate contenders this year. If they dont, they wont.
