I don't think SMith has any trade value. Teams now know that Smith is not in the 49ers plans and they know that for certain the 49ers will not pay Smith the 8 Mil salary. The other teams will just wait til the 49ers cut Smith and get him for free.

This. It's a business. Just because 9er fan wants to believe Smith is an asset doesn't mean he is to another franchise.

Honestly, without the financial ramifications, I don't see anybody trading for him. Why give up anything for a dink-and-dunk specialist who relies on his punter to play "field-position-warfare."

Would you not take that line from your quarterback any day of the week? I realize he has been shaky many more times than he has been good in his career but he has had his moments the last year and a half. He's fairly solid nowadays.

I don't take stat lines. I use the eye ball test. Alex Smith's stats were, indisputably, fraudulent against the Cardinals. That's not saying he didn't play well, but he wasn't nearly as impressive as the stat-line indicated. He had two real "wow" throws that entire game - the lob to Delanie Walker down the left sideline, and the seem route to Vernon Davis.

If we're just going by stat-lines, wouldn't you take Colin Kaepernick's 84 QBR against St. Louis any day of the week?

the yac was made possible by accurate passing. last year u and others were blasting smith for not giving wr's a chance to get yac.

The majority of his throws were within 10 yards from a perfect pocket. If he's not accurate under those conditions, he should find a new job.

As for the YACs, I think it had more to do with our WRs and atrocious tackling by the Cardinals rather than any special ball placement by the Smith.

That's a bit of a stretch, no? He relies on his punter and kicker more than his arm and leadership.

The Jets defense is terrible, from a statistical standpoint.

I'd be shocked if Smith gets traded. He has no trade value to an opposing GM. I'd also be shocked if he's a Niner on April 2nd.

Yep, and I'll be shocked if he's released before April 1st. It just seems like Harbaugh would wait until last minute (to chase that 1% by giving them less time) and there's the smallest of chances that they feel that they can trade him - but I don't believe so. If they could, obviously, they'd benefit in compensation and being able to decide where he goes (away from the division) - not that he's a Manning or anything.

It might not be worth the gamesmanship or bullshit they could try to spin. If they do so, they will bring up him being a great backup and our reasonable total QB payout for the three QBs we have. After this QB switch, unless Smith comes back and wins the SB, we know they can't plausibly say they see him as our QB (in the real sense). Even if we won and they said it, I wouldn't believe them, but they could push that if we won with him starting (injury or otherwise).

I agree with the first paragraph because I don't think teams will trade for him, especially when they could just wait until April 1st.

As to your second paragraph, Alex Smith may be the biggest QB free agent with Vick, with a few teams looking for a QB (Schefter, Clayton, Mike and Mike, and a few local reporters). He could go with Norv or possibly Roman somewhere due to systems familiarity. A lot of people have noted the weakness or uncertainty of this year's QB draft. Flynn and Campbell could be available, too.

There won't be a bidding war, but he's more than a dink-and-dunk specialist who relies on field position. I think you exaggerate how little he can and does do just like some people exaggerate how much he can and does do. But that's just my opinion. Whatever he is, he's not worth giving anything up for him. Even if he were worth the contract, just wait and sign him.

And just to be clear, I'm not arguing for him over Kaep.

Yep, and I'll be shocked if he's released before April 1st..

Here is how it will all go down.

As soon as the season ends (or before) Baalke & Co. will offer Smith a TIOLI offer to remain with the 49ers as a back-up, after which, Smith will either sign or his agent will be given permission to seek a trade, after which he will either be traded or released.

Pretty simple.

You're right. I thought about changing that to "I wouldn't be surprised if" but wanted to use the word shocked like he used it. Man, there is a lot more time between February 3 and April 1st than I felt there was. That would be too long to string it along.

The 49er organization will deal with Alex in an ethical manner of the highest order - there will be no games. Keep in mind an entire fan base and team will be paying close attention.

That makes me feel better - I sometimes am a pessimist.

I think the Niners might drag their feet ever so slightly before they outright release Alex as a means to try and keep him away from their division rivals in Arizona, but Bem is right on with how it will go down - take a new deal or leave, otherwise feel free to look for a trade destination anytime up until April rolls around.

the ball placement has to be there or it doesn't matter. i just find it funny how smith gets bashed even when he plays well...

Man Id hate to be Alex Smith with how much shit you guys talk about him. Had a shit team for 5 years and he took the blame for it for the most part despite the fact the entire team sucked big time. You finally get a good coach and some nice pieces around him and they guy wins 20 out of 26 starts including taking his team to a come from behind win in the playoffs and within 1 Williams fuck up of the Super Bowl and the first chance you get you are all crying for his head to replace him with a guy who isnt even that great. Kaep is OK and may become good but he isnt even a top 15 QB right now and to listen to you guys you'd think he was the second coming of Joe Montana. Fuck I hope Alex gets out of there, I dont even really like the guy but he deserves better than your fan bases treatment of him for sticking it out and being solid.

I thought the short back shoulder touchdown pass to Crabtree was a good throw as well. As for that seam route to Davis, that seems to have disappeared from the 49er repoitoire.

what i like is his poise and decision making. he's made huge strides since preseason and should improve with playing time.

The ball was there - so were tacklers - many of them! Thankfully our receivers broke most of their tackles.

Well, apparently the coach didn't think Alex is good enough to keep his starting job over a 2nd year player, despite having won 20 out of 26, like you have mentioned.

I agreed with Alex when he said that he didn't think he did anything to lose the starting job, but the writing is on the wall that, barring injury to Kaepernick, Alex is done as a starter for the San Francisco 49ers. Harbaugh was the one playing up being "Alex Smith Super Fan #1" last year, but he was also pretty quick to start inserting Kaepernick into the 2012 gameplan. The Niners want to run Pistol & "WildKaep" formations, but the formations kind of lose their spontaneity when Alex runs back in the next play. I don't think mixing the 2 QBs was helping either of them, and Alex seemed (IMO) to begin acting frantic and doing too much, for example his 3 Int game vs NYG, or getting himself hurt trying to scramble like he's Kaepernick.

At this point in this storyline we can only hope that Harbaugh made the right choice going with "potential" over "reliability."

Yes, Alex LED this team to all those things you mentioned and Colin is the second coming of Joe Montana. <jsmh>
