I kept saying it on the Redskin board and they got pissed at me and banned me so I’ll say it here. You can throw for 4500-5000 yards all you want but if you can’t win games or be seen as a leader on and off the field, you ain’t sticking around too long. Smith led the Chiefs to be contenders again. No surprise the Redskins have moved past Kirk Cousins. Cousins can’t even lead the Redskins to a winning record over three years. With that said, the Redskins didn’t help Cousins much either. No running game, bad o-line with no depth, WRs can’t catch the ball, defense sucks against the run. Just bad all around.

1 word this year for most of the problems = INJURIES

Cousins is not worth $34mill a year. Smith isn’t worth $24mill at the age of 34. To get rid of a starting young promising star CB who is playing under his rookie salary is what sucks to give up. With the #13th pick Redskins weren’t going to find their replacement at QB unless you feel Mayfield would be ready day 1.

Chiefs got better
Redskins got slightly cheapier but older

Kirk will get a lot of money from some team and he's thrilled it's not the Redskins. I would be, lol!

Is he thrilled if it’s the Browns or Jets? Idk if I’d be thrilled about that.

Philly had injuries too. A major one to their star QB which is worse than any injury Washington had. But look where they are. Redskins roster is just not that good. No running game, not due to injuries. No reliable wide receiver to catch the ball, not due to injuries. A defense that’s really bad against the run, not due to injuries. The roster is just lackluster at best. I’m not gonna say the injuries didn’t affect them because it obviously did, but they didn’t finish where they finished solely on injuries.

He’ll be pretty happy when he gets that big bag of money from whoever has the most. Because he’s getting a BIG bag of money soon.
Some team will foolishly pay him $25-$30 mil a year and that team better have a good supporting cast around him or else it ain’t gonna pay off. The thing with Cousins is he doesn’t make guys around him better. Those RBs and WRs better already be good when he gets there.

I think your putting to much win/loss weight on the shoulders of the QB.
Gotta remember hes only one of 22.

All QBs are judged by Wins and Losses. He is gonna be no different. 3 years as a started, 1 playoff appearance, 1 division title, no playoff wins and got worse and worse each season. Went from 1st to last in the division. That doesn’t speak good things about Cousins or the coaching staff at Washington.

In summary...

Because Alex Smith has led the Chiefs to the playoffs 4 out of the last 5 years. Smith isn’t the stat machine Cousins is but Smith make the players around him just that much better and that’s what a QB getting paid $24 mill a year should do.

Well.if Washington has those weaknesses good luck with Alex Smith. Alex is a good QB but he doesnt elevate the play of those around him
He does more than Cousins did. And obviously the team feels more confident in admits than Cousins. They were willing to pay Smith close to $24 mill a year but weren’t willing to pay Cousins $2-3 mil a year more even with all his stats. That should tell you something. Seemed pretty easy for Washington to kick Cousins to the curb. Especially if they did this before the damn Super Bowl which is usually unheard of.

As a Redskins fan, I'm okay with this.

Cousins I think is better than Smith, but the cost it would have taken to pay Cousins would have crippled us under the salary cap, and we wouldn'thave been able to address our other needs.

Smith is overpaid at 24m, but not ludicrously so for a veteran starting QB. There are plenty of quarterbacks more overpaid than that in this league. (Soon to be including Cousins) And it gives the skins flexibility to make other moves.

This was clearly a "make the best of a bad situation" (albeit a situation that they created for themselves in the botched transition from RG3 to Captain Kirk)

Given that, it was probably the best the Skins could have hoped for

He threw for the 4th most passing yards against the Patriots in the playoffs in the last 10 years. Compared to how he usually plays, that’s MVP caliber type stats. Besides, it was a foregone conclusion that Bortles wasn’t leading the Jags to a comeback victory against the Patriots.
Peyton Manning, 2013 AFC Championship: 400 yards
Matt Schaub, 2012 Divisional Round: 343 yards
Andrew Luck, 2013 Divisional Round: 331 yards
Ben Roethlisberger, 2016 AFC Championship: 314 yards
Joe Flacco, 2011 AFC Championship: 306 yards
Eli Manning, Super Bowl 46: 296 yards
Blake Bortles, 2017 AFC Championship: 293 yards

7th most, not 4th.

Smith has a multi year, multi million dollar contract while Cousins doesn’t have a job now. Don’t think he’s feeling that happy about things right now.
Yeah he's only going to be one of the highest paid players in the league in a few weeks when he does sign. Must be pissed that free agency hasn't started yet.

Washington was a MASH unit.....their OL had a ton of injuries.

Not terrible
Cousins is what? Top 15 QB at best?

Can't blame the Skins for not wanting to make him the highest paid player in the game

Is he thrilled if it’s the Browns or Jets? Idk if I’d be thrilled about that.
He's a free agent, he can go where ever he wants. If he's on the Browns or Jets it's because he wanted to go there, it's not like he'd be forced. So he'll be thrilled no matter what.
